Got to the first farm and setup on my first stand at 8:30 a.m. stayed for about 30 minutes with no luck. I decided to hit another farm about 10 minutes away. As I got out of the truck, it read -21°C, cold, but if you’re dressed for it, it isn’t too bad.

I got to the second farm and set up by 9:45 a.m., but after 15 minutes with no sign of a coyote, I decided to pack it up and move to the other end of the farm (about 500 yards away) to give it a try. I got set up again and, just before 10:30 a.m., started calling toward the neighbouring bush.

I called on and off for about 20 minutes before seeing the head of a coyote bobbing along just on the other side of the tree line. He stopped, and I could only see his ears and head through the brush. I muted the call, hoping he’d step into the field, but that didn’t work, she just sat there (I wonder what she was thinking).

I decided to lip squeal her a few times, and that was enough to spark her curiosity. She stepped into an opening, giving me a shot at about 35 yards. Down she went. I played pup distress for a few minutes, maybe I should have played it a little longer, because when I stepped into the other field to retrieve my downed coyote, there was another one about 175 yards out. It saw me and took off.

Getting one is better than none, especially in these cold conditions, but I love it.

Man, you're busy!

Tried this AM for about 30min using some coyote vocals then rabbit and nothing, just a pile of mule deer. But that wind was to much for this guy to hang around any longer. Bloody hands can't take it.

Still not seeing much for track or droppings round here either.

good work Fratri! Are you doing any coyote vocalizations (howls etc) or just rabbit distress?
1st 2 stands did the coyote vocalization after some dying rabbit, 3rd stand was just rabbit in distress. I would have eventually went to vocals if no showing on the distress, but this female was rubbed up good so I think mating is going on

Are you hitting the same spots multiple times during the season? I typically call the spot once early season with various prey distress and hit them again during Feb/early March with mating calls year over year

I typically hit the same farms multiple times during the season, with that said, I only go when wind is good and hope that there's a coyote that doesn't know the game yet :)
Depending on the feeling I get, I could go back the next day or wait a week or two before going back, it all depends how it played out the last time I was there. I like to think and I could be wrong but if a coyote did not show up on one of my stands, there were no coyotes around to hear the call, so if I go back the next day, maybe they will be there now.... I don't know for sure but I like to think positive, who knows, they are so unpredictable. I really haven't had much luck with vocals. Not confidence in them just yet so use them sparingly.

Right on makes sense. I got about 12 spots that I know no one else visits and am rarely disappointed with them. The other 7 see some traffic. I find this time of year the sequence of female invitation howl, 2-3min pause, female invasion howl, pause 2-3, couple rounds of female wimper with a min in-between, followed by aplha male excited draws them in quick!!!!
