market stories

Some of the stories surrounding these things are remarkable. Apparently the outside was heavily coated with grease to guard against the salt air and the occassional dunking. Although outlawed many market hunters knew no other way to make a living and persisted for many years. To avoid the wardens they hunted at inconvenient times anticipating the general public and wardens would be occupied or asleep. heard many of them preferred Sunday mornings or holidays.
If a game warden did show up they just heaved it over the side with a buoy and a bag of salt attached. over a few days the weight of the bag of salt diminished allowing the buoy to show them where to pick up ther punt gun for another days use.

Sir Samuel Baker, an English hunter of the late 1800's had a 2 bore he called "Baby". It fired a lead ball weighing 1/2 A POUND!! He shot a fair bit of African dangerous game with it but said later in life that he regretted having anything to do with it as it affected his shooting very badly. Apparently it kicked a little.

And probably got annoyed that there was nothing left of his target to use as a trophy...
