2 leasons from range day

I was lucky to have a couple hours Saturday to do some shooting and plinking at the range. Being a monkey see monkey do type learner I usually need to see something with my own eyes to believe it. The day had 2 undeniable leasons:

1) ammo matters. There was a big difference between my group sizes comparing a more expensive target ammo to all other ammos. All shots taken prone from a bipod at the same target stand and the $11/50 Elley? gun club was phenomenally different out of the same gun with the same shooter than Federal Bulk, CCI Mini Mags, Blazer, etc.. Like I had trouble believing it was the same gun and same shooter different. (Oddly enough CCI mini mags did not outperform any of the other "cheap bulk ammo" which surprised me)
2) Potatoes make excellent plinking targets because if hit well they nearly explode. I sort of feel like I need a boot in the ass for shooting potatoes in a world where some people don't have enough food to eat, but they are a hell of a lot cheaper than a store bought target and more reactionary than cans and plastic bottles.

1. What rifle/scope set up?

2. Poke the potatoes with a fork and leave them in a bucket of water overnight, and they’ll explode even better.

Shooting Eley Tenex was a difficult lesson for me.

Now all other rimfire ammo gets compared to it and I usually wind up disappointed.
Of course my rifle would like the expensive stuff.

^yep! That advice is given out in this forum at least 2-3 times a week, but I get the sense that a large percentage of 22 shooters who read it...ignore it. Doesn't change the fact that it's true though~the gun will always tell YOU what it wants, not the other way around. I never use potatoes, but carrots and pumpkins...the same is definitely true. lol As for potatoes as targets, don't feel a shred of guilt about that. If you want to donate to charities..that's a personal decision...and has nothing to do with the pursuit of your sport here in Canada. We all work hard, and all deserve to enjoy the fruits of our labour. One issue has nothing to due with the other, so whether you "use" potatoes eating them, or "use" them to shoot at~you paid for them, and a Canadian farmer is better off either way.

Also one should consider that potatoes do not absorb CO2 like trees do. Save the trees, use potatoes.
Ms. Greta may just thank you, lol.

Someone left their "Orange Ball 1000 Hits" target at the range where they are not to be shooting off the ground.
Got an "S" hook through and suspend it on a string at the 192 range.
The string is about 38-39 inches long depending on the ammo and have a target on the board where the string attaches.
With the long string the ball continues to move for a while after a hit.
Four out of five is pretty good. With a .22 it might take 10,000 hits. Have broke the sting three times which is just bad luck.
