Don't think I've seen this phenomenon discussed before so thought it should get in print for reference here. For anyone thinking about typical pistol reflex dot sights for rifles.

I got out with the super short micro length action howa mini grendel with Holosun 507c 2 moa green dot sight mounted as far forward on an extended front 3 slot base and dialled in at 206 yards, 201 horizontal. I shot over bags and dot covers about half that 15" gong at 206 and I had already played with 1" squares at short distances in house to gauge size so already knew the dot was approximately 3.75 moa with that closer eye relief than you'd get at pistol hold distances.

My group size here with factory hornady black is about same size as when I had the leupold 6x36 mounted on it earlier in year although I'd take the scope further if needed. I think I'll stick to mpbr with this one and for deer size game that dot size is like a built in rangefinder, if the dot fits inside kill zone pull the trigger, if it covers or is bigger than the kill zone have to start thinking about focusing on the bottom of the dot and moving it up as needed. Didn't get a chance to put out more gongs or play with holds to see where my capabilities started to struggle but will one day. This holosun was just an easier option than mounting iron sights as where would you start on that? a gunsmith required, this option no smith needed, as I wanted a no magnification iron sight option in the safe.

Good info bb ... thanks for sharing. Will be going irons on mine with a micro dot mounted on occasion in the same place as yours when mines done eventually.

I have a 3 moa pistol sight on my 243 at the moment.
I always thought the dot looked bigger than 3moa. But still shoot 2-3” at 100yrds.
Plenty for a truck gun or back up.

Now I want to measure it.

Ya I wonder if those guys making them need to start advertising dot size at x amount of inches and maybe give standard pistol, and a couple other distances also. I think to match the eye relief you need to have the dot about where most rifles with iron sights have the rear sight on the barrel is. Like the ruger pc9, there are rear sight replacement plates for these red dots. I just couldn’t see a simpler way to do it on my rifle without involving custom work with the smith.

And as you found the accuracy is still there, if you can center a crosshair you can center a dot. I shot this just as good or maybe even a bit tighter at 200 as I did with a 6x Leupold. Wont comment on how I do when I have to move the dot up on targets and reference bottom of dot etc but I’ll probably surprise myself a bit there. Trust the data and always pays off. I’m sure I’d drive this set up solid to 300 pretty easy as still on fur and referencing bottom of dot.

To see what it covers in house you can take a 3” post it and divide it into 1” squares, put on wall about 10-15 yards away and see how it Centers in the center 1” square, then take a sharpie and start filling in the 1” square from outside edges shrinking the opening until the dot fits inside the black and then measure the hole when you got it. Some quick math from there you can rough moa it. It worked for me and didn’t change when I put it on target at 200. From recollection dot covered about 1/2” at 13 yards in my house test, 0.5” x 100 dived by 13 = about 3.8 moa.
