Got my cow moose draw this year as well as a buddy of mine and his son. Long story short as I am real tired...The 2 moose ended up being about 100 yards from me. I have shot moose b4 but had to thread a slug between a s**t load of poplar and silver willows.
I tried out the 7mm WBY mag this year I bought from Rembo and it worked great. My first shot was at about 100 yards and I connected, second at 110 and a miss, cow was running away from me then turned broadside at 120 yards and I drove a 175 high on her shoulder and she dropped...
K life is cool now...So me and a couple of buddies go to the cow and the calf wont leave her. I get this not good feeling of being charged by a moose. The calf is standing 50 yards away and it actually looks like a yearling and runs east....then south....then bedamned if it doesnt stand just south of my truck by about 20 yards.
I throw my rifle up and expect so see my truck getting kicked...then there is a truck on the road and my one buddie who has a bull draw has to get going, gives me the keys to his shop and takes off. So now we have me,a pissed off calf and a cow down. The truck from the road pulls in and the calf circles to the west and comes in the bush again and is 50 yards from me. Then it turns and runs out.
I realize its my buddie with 2 tags and yell to him that a calf or yearling is still in here. They get out of the truck and the young shooter is told to go with me. We walked up to the cow and his Dad circled around to meet us. Light is fading fast so i told the youngin to stay there as the other moose will come back looking.and I have to make some calls to get the dice rolling on the cow I have down and get a quad lined up to do it..
Within 3 minutes I hear a yell...Dad...it came out of the bush and I can see it...Dad yells to give it a minute and wait for it to turn broadside and I yell to him crank it now.I am only 5 feet from this youngin... Yearling moose runs to the left and is in the trees, then stops and is looking at Dad...I yell at the junior to run for the field as I have a full picture of this..
I watch this kid running for full glory and when he is 30 feet from the edge of the field I yelled at him that the moose was 40 yards to his left..( I am right beside him at all times)....He
stopped and I watched him bring up his rifle, crank a 6 mm round in,and hit the moose with 85 grains of barnes slug.
The moose turned left but was hit hard and went over the hill...by this time I was at the point where the young shooter was and told him to get beside me as I watched a set of ears just go over the hill then nothing...It took one finishing shot as the moose had dropped but here are some pics of tonights little soire...I have shot moose b4 so my pics are taken with headlights after we got the quad in to get mine out...his are with natural lighting....an lets just say that was one happy young dude tonight...
