Well we went out for 'yotes again today and the good part is I got 2.
First one was a clean 80-90 yard shot, 3" 00 buck through a full choke and she dropped like a stone.
Second one (the male) would avoid our trucks and guys like the plague. Old bastard and he new how to get away from us and trick the dogs. He was able to get away and ahead of the the dogs a couple times but we were able to turn him away form the roads real easy and keep him in the concession.
Anyways, after 2 hours of dickin' around he was too tired to run from the dogs so it was a slow chase through the field and I got to watch the whole thing from the bush I was in. One last run at the road but one of the guys was there waiting by the gateway he figured he was gonna use to get across. Two shots and then the coyote tumbles, goes 30 some odd feet and drops. Dead? ... I'm about 5-600 yards away so I can't see if he's still got his head up, dogs aren't biting him so I don't know what's going on. Ask the guys on the road... no answer. Start walkin' not paying too much attention then buddy pipes up "Coyotes back up Pat he's headed right for ya". Now the bastard must have either passed out for a few seconds or played possum lol, IDK but I just started running. He comes at a 45 towards me and to my left.
Here's the kicker, I smoke ... ran full tilt and covered that distance as quick as I could. He would stop and let the dogs near him but when I got too close he always found steam to keep going. Well my lungs finally catch up to me and I just dropped to my knees to catch my breath. Then I hear "get up, go" coming from the farm the coyote was heading towards. This was the highlight of my day, little mexican guy yelling at me to get up. My turn to find some more steam to keep chasing.
When I finally caught up the hair on the back of that poor buggers back was standing straight up and he was not happy. With the dogs milling all around him I couldn't get a shot in to finish him off. Dogs moved away for a millisecond and I got a quick shot in (wasn't the best because of the damn hounds) and it dropped him but he was still trying to get his head up. Now I could have let him expire but for one I don't want any of the dogs getting bit and two I hate to let an animal suffer ... even a coyote.
No way I'll get another shot in with the dogs around it so what do I do? By the title of the thread you should have figured it out already. Snapping at the dogs and they were way to close for my liking so my last option was the butt of my shotgun (standing in the middle of a field with nothing around me). KOd him alright, but snapped the stock in half. The wood was dried right out.
Little mexican guy ran down clapping his hands and was very exited about what he had just witnessed. He was very interested in the coyote, I don't know if he never seen one that close or not but he kept commenting on how big it was and kept pointing at it's teeth lol. He had seen all my running and I was still panting so what does he do? Grabs the coyote and my gun and brings both back to the driveway for me (only about 150 yards) so I can go catch the dogs.
All in all a pretty good day...
Now anyone know where I can find a stock for a Mossberg 395 bolt action?
