2 new XCR questions - not covered in FAQ

I have made up my mind to purchase, and have made an offer on EE. You guys are a fountain of knowledge and steered me correctly on my other questions. I have a couple more:

- when you interchange barrels, how close is the accuracy? I want .223 and 6.8 and was considering putting my burris signature 6.5-24 or my bushnell 4200 elite 2.5-10 x 40. I rarely take shots over 300yards at deer or coyotes. Do you guys find when you change the barrels you have to change the settings on your scope? I know they might be close, but over 200 yards a little variation might be a big difference on paper. If I used a scope with external dials, I might be able to record the settings for each barrel and just dial it in when I change barrels.

-on the mag capacity issue, I see many sizes pinned to 5 rounds, which I understand, but what is the deal with the 10 round pistol mags that are legal to obtain? Are they only legal to use at designated ranges for restricted firearms or can you hunt with them also?

-has anyone tried camo (or any pattern) dipping an xcr? There is a guy in ontario BRUSHFIREHG.COM that does guns, bows etc. I saw a couple bowtechs today, 1 in snake skin, 1 in carbon fiber. It would look fantastic on some parts of the xcr. Do any parts of the gun other than the barrel or the gas block get too hot for this process? There is a gun on here, that was offered for sale at 1 time, if you google search german olive xcr, I don't know how that was painted or coated, but it is one of the best looking XCRs I have seen (fluted barrel also).

I don't know much about the other questions (since I don't own an XCR:(), but on the topic of the 10 round LAR-15 pistol mags, they can be legally used in any firearm that uses AR mags. The capacity is determined by what gun they were made for, not what they are used in. Having said that, if your provincial hunting regs state that only 5 round mags can be used, then you must use 5 rounders in accordance with said laws.
 
Since the ballistic curve for each caliber are different you will have to re-sight in your scope when you switch them, easy way to do it just make a mark on the dial for each caliber zero, so you can quickly go from one to the other.

10 round pistol mags are legal because they designed for use in an AR pistol, so it follows the pistol mag rule, the fact that there is no difference between a pistol and a rifle lower is just a fortunate loophole.


only the barrel and the piston tube gets hot on an XCR, so the camo film dipping is ok.

It doesn't matter what firearm you use the magazine in, it only matters which firearm the magazine was designed for.

As for hunting with them, that depends on the provinces hunting regulations, but even if it is legal, I wouldn't bring them hunting to avoid trying to explain the regs to an overzealous conservation officer.

i always throw my binder with the firearms act, the charter of rights and freedoms, certs, and other information, like the ruling on the lar mags, and such. i WANT to use everything i can legally use, and not be afraid of a confrontation with someone that does not know the rulings.
 
When I change barrels on my XCR I find it takes about 5 shots before the grouping becomes consistent again. As mentioned, the ballistics difference between .223 and 7.62 is considerable, so you will definitely have to readjust your scope when you change barrels. Remember, ballistics is mostly about muzzle velocity. .223 typically is around 3200 fps on my XCR, whereas 7.62x39 is around 2300 fps, so you can see that the 7.62 is going to drop a lot faster than the .223 once it get's out there. Don't know what the velocity of the 6.8 would be offhand, but you could figure out the drop pretty quickly with a ballistics program.
 
Camp Cook; what's your reasoning on changing scopes along with the barrels ? I've never had any problems readjusting my scope when I switch barrels. As I've stated, when switching barrels I've always found the first few rounds to start out high until the barrel settles in, so there is plenty of opportunity to reset the scope to a proper zero. Perhaps you have a better idea I don't know about. :)
 
I'll be mostly using a 4-12 with the 223 barrel and if I went to a 7.62X39 I would use the iron sights or 1-4X scope.

As well as I hate re-adjusting scopes find it far easier to just switch scopes for different applications.

Here is an example this pic is of my Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM shortened to 21" it is set up with a rear XS Sights backup ghost ring sight with front NECG banded Masterpiece front sight/Burris 1X EER/VX3 2.5-8X B&C reticle/VX3 4.5-14X B&C reticle for the different uses that I use this rifle for.

Thanks for the info Camp Cook - when you switch these scopes, as long as they were mounted at the same point on a rail system, that they shoot same point of impact every time you remount them? I have seen QD rings before, but never thought they would be repeatable.

I would like to start a thread to see what kind of bases, heights, sizes of scopes guys are using.
