hello me and a friend of mine both went into the regular army as anfantryman
from the reserves, we had thought there would be some kind of rifle team but cant seem to get a strait answer around work, i understand that the DCRA helps with the military shooting competitions is anyone on here a member of a CF rifle team? I have herd of events taking place in places like canought and a team going to Bisley UK for competitons against other commonwealth countries australia, england etc any info or a contact would be great!

In Alberta we have the Service Rifle group at Homestead Range. Check the website www.albertarifle.com, click groups, click Canadian Service Rifle Association. They have all the poop there including contact info and match dates.
Cheers, Glen

There is Spruce Grove as well that runs 'Service Rifle' type competitions which is a little closer to home. Not sure why, but they're match consists of only 40 rounds.....

Have you looked at the base club?

When I was in with the 2nd PPCLI back in the 70's & 80's all the Bn's had rifle teams. But they only formed and trained for a certian time each year. But I have a funny feeling I remember some of my old buddies that are still in mention something that they were discontiued back in the 90's because of the cut backs by the the Lib's at the time.... but I could be wrong.

Our match consists of 40 rounds because the Queen does not supply our ammo!!!
For info about our matches please write me at
srpl@ocii.com
I will send you a match schedule and a small booklet about our matches.
We have been running military type Service Rifle matches for about 14 years now, 1st at St Albert Range, then at Mundare and now at Spruce Grove.
Match fee's are $ 10.00 if you are a member of the club. If not you are allowed to shoot 2 matches, with a sponsered day pass, if, after that, you do not have a membership then a day pass is $20.00 and the match fee is double for each match.
Next match, 26 August, 10:30 registration 11am start. Service Rifle and Service Pistol.

I just left 2 VP last year. The only thing you can do is get into the sniper cell and go out to the CISC. Besides, shooting a C3...or I guess the .338 now, is a lot better then shooting the C7.

The Queen does not pay for much any more. If you want to shoot then you have to pay your own way. It you want to be paid to be world class then take up hockey (unfortunately).

I note, with some interest, that no one contacted me from this post series about our matches. The match we had on Sunday was very good, well attended (25 competitors) and didn't get rained out! Next match 16 September, Precision (Sniper) rifle. Any rifle any sight!

....If you guys ran a match with more rounds down range, you might attract a number of shooters from the Calgary area....;)

talk to Hungry in the service rifle net and navalsniper
pm with your name and i will contact you "eventually" on the DWAN
and give you a back grounder on what its all about
there was a few teams from out west who participated in the NSCC last year
and the RCRs and a few reserve units have teams also
Word of advice .....don't give up
it takes time though

We have run the same match basically for 12 years. This year we have had the following participation,
25 Mar Service Rifle 38 competitors
29 Apr. Service rifle 32 competitors
27 May Sniper rifle 28 competitors
10 June NRA Large bore 18 competitors
24 June Service Rifle 33 competitors
22 July Sniper Rifle 28 competitors
26 Aug. Service Rifle 28 competitors.
Thats a total of 185 competitors and 7,080 rounds of ammunition so far this year. We run a match once a month sometimes twice depending on the match. All of the matches beginning with the May match untill the Oct. match also have a pistol match attached. Each competitor shoots a total of 580 rounds per year at matches (If the come to them all) and probably that much again in practice.
We have people as young as 12 years to as old as 85 competing on a regular basis. We shoot 300m, 200m and 100m all with iron sights from 4 different positions and we have only cancelled 2 shoots at our present location both times due to weather. The first for too much snow, we could not get to the range and the second for too bloody cold (Remember November 2006?)
I think we use enough ammunition!
We also have a 2 times Queens medal competitor shooting with us, he is good but he does not always win.
That enough challange for you to trek up from Calgary?

As a matter of my own interest, how many competitors do you guys get at your matches? How many rounds? What course of fire?

Scott

The course of fire for "Service Rifle" at Spruce Grove Gun Club is as follows:

(Any military Rifle (Or civilian version) from any country from any time period)

5 rounds sitting 300m, 3 minutes,
5 rounds prone, 300m, snap, 1 round per 3 second exposure
10 rounds prone, 200m,rapid 10 rounds per 30 sec exposure, w/mag change
5 rounds prone, 200m, snap 1 round per 3 second exposure
5 rounds sitting, 200m snap 1 round per 3 second exposure
4 rounds prone, 100m rapid 4 rounds in 15 second exposure
2 rounds sitting, 100m snap 2 rounds per 5 second exposure
2 rounds kneeling, 100m snap 2 rounds per 5 second exposure
2 rounds standing, 100m snap 2 rounds per 5 second exposure

Any questions?

Hi Scott,

I have no doubt the S.G. shoot would be challenging and competitive with a whole bunch of fun mixed in. Dave O. came down for our Provincials match; a true gentleman, and fantastic shot...
Part of the reason I compete in service rifle events is it gets me out shooting and putting rounds down range. 6 hours round trip is alot of driving for 40 rounds is all I'm saying.
I'm glad you guys have a fantastic turnout for your shoots, if it isn't broken, why fix it right?

We try to keep our matches true to the DCRA matches 1 thru 12 at the prescribed distances, with the exception of the rundown portions. If you've seen our range, you'd know it is not conducive with a safe rundown from mound to mound. We usually make up these with positonal shooting at the further distances (400m sitting for example). With that the round count is 120+ per match, 7 matches this year.

Our turnout is quite a bit lower than yours as we typically get 10 -15 shooters per match. I would account for the lower numbers to a variety of factors. We are not the only range in the Calgary area that runs a service conditions match, as the CDTSA runs a 100m match which enjoys a good number of competitors attending their matches. I think aside from that, the distance to Homestead from Calgary, and shooters not wanting to compete out to 500m are the biggest hurdles to getting out more competitors.

We'll get you guys on the first or second relay so you'll be heading back to Calgary by 2pm. Does that help? Judging by what you've described, we have the same # of shooters and about the same # of round count for a shooting year.
