2-way radios for hunting wooded areas

I'm standing in Cabela's and they seem to sell the Motorola Talkabout series radios. I'd look into them as a solution. Prices between $120 to $170 a pair depending on features.

I have a box full of GMRS radios. They're all crap. Best I've found are Motorola Spirits, I'm not sure they make them anymore. Either UHF or VHF, Single channel, on and off. Nothing to mess up. They use them for construction crews in buildings, etc.

GMRS - two watts max and plenty of rocks, bushes and elevation differences to interfere with the signal. Not surprising they won't be amazing some situations.

We use portables transmitting at 5 watts and sometimes transmissions can be heard a few KMs away and other times the signals are scrambled between two buildings. Hard to know how reliable portable to portable coverage is going to be.

A nice 25 watt repeater high up would be ideal.
