I must also send out a massive THANK YOU to Barney ( Tactical Teacher aka Hungry ) for taking the time, the afternoon as it turned out yesterday even tho he was a little ill to help me finish this build and to get it sighted in! I cant thank you enough for all that you do for the m14 and m1 community here and for you guys out west, when Tactical Teacher heads out your way this year and you have an M14 of M1 do yourself a favour and go to his clinics for great times full of fun jokes and learning all things M14 n M1.

Thanks again Barney and Tony Ben and Different for all their contributions to this forum and m14forums.

I too have a USGI parts build M14 that Barney also helped out with. He supplied a Winchester bolt, and a USGI SA barrel, and installed them with me at his place...then we went shooting! the only chinese part on mine is the receiver, everything else is USGI. I have the selector switch as well!

I went with the 'button' dummy selector switch. Either way, it makes the rifle look 'right' IMHO!!!

Yeah it's a beautiful thing! We screwed and indexed that TRW barrel on at a M1 Garand Clinic in Petawawa on 30 Nov 2014. It was an awesome experience. Since the TRW barrel is a USGI chrome lined barrel we did not need to finish headspace. So on this final approach (a year later) we took the stripped bolt and dropped in the Forrester gauges...

* closed on the 1.630" GO gauge
* DID not close on the 1.634" No-Go gauge
* did NOT close on the 1.634" Field gauge

So we knew we were good to go with a tight chamber (we mic'ed things to 3 thou with my old beat up RCBS Precision Mic)

We used 11 M1A gas cylinder locks until we found a super tight fitting unit. I was super pleased but that's after ceejay did all the testing and fitting and flipping 180 degree fix. He is an expert now whether he likes it or not. :)


I was super impressed that this was a super straight barrel and it liked the centered front sight (typical USGI 80 thou front sight ) with a centered rear USGI rear sight assembly. All is good at the range session and all is centered. Life does not get better.

Even the copper washed Norinco ammo shot into the bull of a few inches. Not bad at 100m with irons. Lots and lots of potential since the USGI wood stock suffered from (lots of) wood compression from many years of previous service. :cool:

It's a super pleasure whenever a plan comes together (working with USGI or US spec parts like M1A) and there are no goofy surprises (read: Norinco High school shop class). Kinda reminds me of the Sudbury 30 March 2015 Clinic we ran for only M1 Garands. Everything works... :eek:

It was a Saturday well spent even if I was sick and (nose) dripping all over my work bench! Drixoral sure works wonders. I used it late last night and slept like a rock. Thanks, ceejay! We both benefited from this time well spent! :wave:

Thanks everyone for all the nice compliments and to Barney for filling in the rest of the info about saturday, and I would be more than happy to help anyone in the shwa area with their m14 issues, :d and thank you Dratt for putting up the proper link.:dancingbanana:
 
Will be cool to see how the ol GI barrel holds up in groups. I'm pretty happy with the trw barrel (and parts) on my one standard config rifle. Not gonna beat the 1.5moa challenge with it but she holds her own in her own way :sniper:
 
Just a shout out to Barney! He was most helpful in my first build as well. She's a good shooter. Anyone wanting to learn from some one with passion for both teaching and firearms, this is your guy!! Thanks again TT
