But if you want an O/U shotgun "in the working man's price range", look no further than the E/E... you can often find a decent O/U or SXS for under 1000.00

I feel your pain. Wait until you start to shoulder some of them. Your $1000 will stretch to $1300, then $1600, then "Man is this ever sweet! Is $400 more really all that bad?" Then you'll find that P&D has a nice Fanchi 28 guage/20 guage combo for $2400, down from $2800.
Back to the price range you mentioned though....You can get the Mossberg Silver Reserve 12/20 combo for less than $900.
I thought about it, Goggled the shizzle out of it, and found some unfavorable probs with the firing pins.
Sniper22 has the Savage Milanos for a decent price. Very favorable reviews, Italian made, Savage value. But you only get one guage, no combo.

I have never been able to understand the need or desire for this type of combo. Although both are wonderful gauges, what you get with a combo is a 28 on the same frame as the 20. The combo fitted with the 28 bbls will not do anything that 20 could not do and the 20 is more versatile and ammo is more readily available and often way cheaper. The only advantage with this combo is that some day you might end up in some off beat place that does not have 20 ammo and 28 gauge is plentiful.
Because 28 ga is cool. If i was a practical guy, i would have a 30-06 a 12 ga, and a .22 LR. Fortuantely for me, i am a gun nut, so i need to play and tinker with as many different calibres/guages as possible before i die.
I have both cool gauges, but I am glad that both are on separate frames so I actually have two different things to tinker with.

I have a 20 /6.5X55 express gun which fits 90%of my needs and it is a great gun.
Handloading 3/4oz loads is a snap with it, and I can use the rifle barrels for big game.
The best shotgun combo I have is a set of 28 gauge tubes that fit into 12 gauge barrels, now THAT is a great combo!

I have only seen them for 12 gauge guns, but if your question is what sizes, yes, they make all gauges of tubes.

Go for something a little more different yet. I'm on my 2nd one now but after stupidly selling the 1st a while back I picked up another. A Brno ZH 304 OU, 7x57R & 12ga. Great for those blustery days walking old logging skid roads where you may run into a Ruff Grouse or Mule Deer.

Oldbadger has Brno combination gun , I hate the weight of it , although it is a deadly gun with either the 12 or 308 barrel.Go for something a little more different yet. That would definetly be nice for a late season deer hunt where pheasants are present, but early season pheasant here is 16 days or so before rifle opens where the birds are. My buddy, as well as some neighboring landowners might be a little upset if i tried for a double on a pair of flushing birds with that combo. However, if i made the second shot, i might get my 15 minutes of fame,

The first time I saw or was aware that something along the line of this Brno combo was available was a number of years back. I stopped in to visit my sister & brother in law when I was heading up on a Moose hunt. We went out for a walk on an old logging road in the evening and when we spotted a 'road' Grouse he hammered it. Almost immediately a two point Mulie took off and he pounded that as well. Suddenly, I had to have one of those Brno's!! There are a number of barrel options available and with the Brno I have now, in addition to the 7x57R/12ga barrel combo I also have a set of skeet barrels.
