I've heard this rifle and also that this bullet didn't shoot accurately separately, let alone together. Over 68gr of RL19 it put a 3 shot group in 3/4"@100M today while sighting in a scope that came off another rifle. The scope is a VXII 3-9x50. After I shoot the X bullets I'll try the ELD-X in 230gr, and the 225SSTs. I didn't continue shooting off the bench because my goal was offhand practice.

Nice shooting. With my .338 WM Ruger Hawkeye (after I fixed the funky trigger :p) I got these bench rest groups loading Hornady 250gr bullets and IMR 4064. Seems to like the SP.

Isn't a 20" barrel defeating the purpose of having a .338 wm to some degree?

Not for me. My 375 is a 20" also. Shots over 350 almost unheard of from field positions where I hunt. Lots of thick bush traveling where a longer barrel and heavier gun was a real pain. Would a 28" 35 Whelan equal my ballistics? Maybe, but who wants to carry a fence post through the willows? I want lightish, short, hammer. I sight them in for 200yds, hold 8" high at 300. A rifle shot off a tripod or bipod, or a rest doubling as one is a different animal. I've shot 100s of rounds offhand standing in the last couple of years. Either I'm a terrible shot, or there is some embellishment of people's shooting abilities on line.

The barrel thing comes up a lot. Thing is, a 20" 338WM shoots like a 26"-28" something else. I want some power and a short barrel. The muzzle blast complaints are bs to me. I shoot a 7 1/2" Blackhawk with 180 gr and 31gr H110. I don't feel the blast is excessive.

Looks good. I've got some vanilla 270gr Hornadys coming for my 375. They shot well for me out of the 375RUGER.

A 20 inch .338 WM will have about the same velocity as a 20 inch 338-06 and uses a lot more powder... lots of power with either case, but the 338 WM has the advantage of buying ammo just about anywhere.

Once I get a rifle dialed in then it's time to shoot off-hand. Shooting accurately off the bench is easy and doesn't prove much except that the rifle is dialed in.

My objective is to keep all off-hand shots within a 6 inch diameter circle at 100 and 200 meters.

a 20" 338wm will easily push a 225gr to 2700 fps. 20" 338-06 would be 2550 fps.

Yes, 338wm would require more powder

Thank you. When I ask folks to compare apples to apples, ie. 20" barrels in all the calibers, the discussion pauses a bit. This rifle is a factory 20" carbine. I really like it. Like Dennis said, I can buy ammo anywhere.

The chrono parts are on the way, so I should be able to get some velocities for the 20" 375H&H, and the factory 20" 338WM. From all the research and experimentation I could find online; the 338WM loses about 100fps from 24" to 20". Less velocity is lost in most shorter barrels when using heavy for caliber bullets. The steps between the 338WM and 375H&H for the reloader are not too large or numerous. I'll report I another thread when I have tested velocities.

Following reloading manual data for a 24" barrel .375 H&H Magnum I get about 100 fps less muzzle speed with my 21-1/4" barrel Sako 85 Kodiak so 20 to 30 fps loss per inch less barrel length is an accurate enough estimate.

My 24 inch and then cut to 22 inch 338-06 easily pushed 225's to 2700 fps. I wouldn't expect to lose 150 fps in the next 2 inches...
