Been searching around for a bit now. I wanted to get one of those Colt AR-15A4s that they were supposed to release for 2013. With all the madness in the US lately apparently they put all their production to 16" models.

So heres the question... Does anyone know of anyone making (available in canada) or dealing a 20" AR-15 that is basically stock with the exception of a detachable carry handle? Must be 1:7 twist, whether it is hbar or govt profile. Not looking for a fancy free float or anything. Just want a "mil spec" 20" with 1:7 twist and a detachable carry handle.

Any tips will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Lifetime warranty (in Canada) and terrific quality - 1 in 9 twist though, but that's not a big deal for most folks. I'm curious about your 'need' for 1 in 7, since the vast majority of shooting in 223/556 will not be affected by the difference. In fact there may be more difference between individual rifles than is caused by the twist rate change. Do you intend to shoot very long bullets in the 80 grain class? If so, they will likely not work from the magazine of an AR.

Yeah really, you don't really need a 1:7 in a 20" Barrel, unless you're benchresting heavy bullets, in which case, now you're looking at having a fancy free float and the what have you. The velocity flying out a 20" a 1:9 will serve you well. Hell, even the best bench rest 223's will often only have 1:8. They on the other hand will use a longer then 20" barrel to manage the heavy bullets. A 22" @ 1:8 can spit an accurate 80g no problem.

I agree with conte, the faster twist is to compensate for shorter barrels. This is why what you are looking for is hard to find. At this length and twist rate, you may even get a disadvantage shooting 55gr ammunition.

I like 1:9" twist for 20" barrels. Does the jub wihtout over stabilizing the rounds. 1:12 is even better if you're shooting 55gr exclusively, but those are even harder to find.

I have a 1/9 .80 HBAR and a 1/7 Govt Profile. If I had to carry it all day, I'd take the GP. For scoped sport shooting where I am trying to achieve something sometimes at 100m, usually 200m but also 300/600m, my 1/9 HBAR is my go to gun. It shoots 52SMK to 77SMK very well and shoots C77 ball (and type) into tighter groups than my 1/7 Gov Profile.

The question came to a head recently as I had to pick a barrel for a GA SMR Mk1 Rail. It's going to the 1/9.
