20 burried brand new Spitfires

Priceless find, regardless.

My mother's old chiropractor, RIP (passed away when I was 12 years old or so), flew MkIXs doing train bustups over Europe.

2 FW190 kills to his credit (1 ATA and 1 ATG) and wrote off 10 Spits from debris backblast in getting to close to the trains on strafing runs :D

Epitome of old English boy, that one.

Maybe they buried the Spitfires for a good reason, I mean how many of you would be willing to fly a photo recon Spitfire painted photo recon pink.(and what would the other pilots be saying about you and your "HOT" Spitfire)

over the years, i must have heard about a thousand stories like that- as to how many are true, i would surmise less than 1%- best one i heard of was a super-secret base in ak interior with b-17s and p38s that were transported up there via the ak highway and never used- a whole base- quonsets, kitchens ,psp, you name it- and just abandoned at the end of the war- cost too much bring it back- well, i should imagine that there are STILL folks looking for that one- like the lost lemon mine
and PINK wouldn't bother me at all- if you've ever been at the controls of a MERLIN, even a packard- merlin, the engine is ALIVE- you can FEEL it in the vibrations of the throttle, mix, etc
oh, and btw, there is NO secret base in ak- never was-sat pics would have found the crates

I've heard it said that not all the ME 262's that were made have been accounted for either.

Now that would be a find.

well, the farmers on the prairies would stick ansons in a haypile; or hanging from the rafters in the barn- all kinds of things happened with surplus post war equipment- it wasn't so long ago you would see a wright radial in the airplane trader new in crate for 300- trouble was it wasn't an airplane engine, but the one out of the sherman/lee/grant

If there is any truth to this or not. When I lived in Alberta for a couple years. I worked with a company driven around pretty much everywhere doing service work on mobile and modular homes for warranty. When I got to his home and go inside he had a bedroom that was like a museum. Was full of WW2 militaria. Was there for a couple hours and chatted as I did work. If there is any truth to his stories from what he says when he was in the service during WW2 there is ALL kinds of stuff buried all along the Alaskan highway and in other spots here there and every wheres in the mountains. If there is truth to what he says we are talking planes, carrier, tanks, arm's ect ect.

The US forces left a lot of stuff in the Aleutians, nothing ###y though, mainly a hospital and most of the stuff that was inside of it. From what I understand of the atrocious weather that is very commonplace in the Aleutians, there is probably nothing left of it but a pile of bricks, concrete chunks, and rust by now.

Your no doubt right, but don't forget that only a small portion of the art, gold, antiques, etc., that the Nazis looted from Europe has been recovered; so there are still big stashes of goodies out there somewhere, and it's not inconcevible that the Nazis hid away some it's premier jet fighters to hopefully use later.

We can always dream anyway.

I was offered a spot restoring parts of them after I got out of school. they are magnesium rivets, so I'm sure they will be corroded out not.

i follow the warbird scene pretty closely and if the story is even a quarter true it will be awesome
considering the wrecks that have been or currently are being rebuilt from crash sites all over the world a crated Spitfire would be joy to rebuild compared to a Hurricane found in the muskeg in Russia...
heck there is a guy in Australia or New Zealand that is currently rebuilding 2 or 3 DH Mosquitos basically from scratch...

and here's what's in the crates:

edited to add as much as i love the Spitfire I'd be more excited if they found 20 Hawker Tempests new in the crate as they were supposed to go to the Far East to supplement the RAF at the end of the war....
