.20 ga for bear defense

Just overpower them:

For big bears, most of the tests I've seen online recommend .338 and up with heaviest bullets possible. Shotguns are next, then pistols. All the shotgun slugs they tested broke up too easily against bone, thus not penetrating deeply enough. So if you can't get a rifle, hardest shotgun slugs you can get... Brenneke Black Magics etc., assuming they make those in 20g.

Good luck, I read a lot of stories where the hunter never got off a shot and was mauled by the time his friends were able to drive the bear off. I also loved the park rangers story of when they had to go retrieve the body of that failed actor grizzly guy who lived with the bears and was killed. People get in trouble if they shoot a bear unless it's basically mauling them, but the ranger admitted that he and the other officers were opening up a hailstorm of bullets on every bear that looked at them funny while they were getting the body 'cause they were all scared stiff.

Well Dave, after seeing the box of truth, I would say "No" to 20g for bears but looks like it would do fine for the two legged animals...unless they were the brain eating zombie kind. :D

Remember dealing with black bears is pretty basic. use your head and stay away from them. If you do have to fight its because you startled them, your near thier food or young ect. If you do have to use a 20 ga. go with the biggest load slug you can find. Be warry of your surroundings as most bear encounters end once they know your a human.
I suggest doing some reading on the internet about bear saftey, this could save your and the bears life. If you do have to shoot make sure its dead, dont leave it wounded for some hiker to wander into, then contact the wardens ect.

Black bears can be very dangerous indeed - but they do not have the toughness or the 'tenacity' of a griz. They will not hang out in a fight where they think they might lose or where they're injured.

I'd still stay stick with slugs - get brenneke slugs (marketed in challenger shells i believe) if you're concerned about penetration. A 12 guage is better, but if a 20's what' you got then take some slugs with you and you'll be fine.

PS - practice will do more than which gun you take to ensure you survive a hostile encounter. Practice lots.

PPS - your brain will do more than practice OR guns to keep you safe. Know bears, use your brain.

haha, love these ones:
"If the bear attacks, use your deterrent and fight for your life. Kick, punch or hit the bear with whatever weapon is available. Concentrate your attack on the face, eyes and nose."

Well, it's true for black bears. Wouldn't care to try it on a griz tho. :D

Not to hijack but if you look at bearsmart.com there is a lot of NGO anti political agenda and misinformation there....can you say not so hidden agenda?
