What kind of slugs would work best to deer hunt with a 20 gauge. I have a smooth and rifled barrel.

Just for kicks I bought a pack of winchester super X 3/4oz 3" rifled slugs. Would these do the trick? Also assuming I can only shoot rifled slugs in a smooth bore barrel what choke should I shoot them through?

Sabots in a rifled barrel will give better groups and longer range than
the old pumpkin slugs.
For smooth bore i beleive cylinder bore of Imp cylinder should be the tightest
for using old style rifled slugs..

I would try them all. Spend a half day at the range with a good variety of slugs from different manufacturers, and dont forget to keep notes on which ones perform best.

Start with the cheap ones and work youre way up to the most expensive. Hopefully you wont need the more expensive ones;).

My 12 ga Benelli loves the cheap Winchester 1 oz pumpkin (foster) slugs, with a smooth bore, but has a rifled choke tube. Amazingly tight groups at 100 yards.

Good quality scope and base go a long ways if youre using a scoped gun..

Rottwieler and brenneke slugs are great choices. In 12ga I use rio star slugs and my mossberg rifled barrel will put them thru the same hole all day long. And they fold deer so well

My Father used to shoot deer with his 20G. As said above, its best to try a half dozen different brands of what is available locally. Its been my experience that no two slugs shoot alike, or have any similarities in any two guns. You need to test fire a bunch.

Seing that you have a rifled barrel, sabots are your best bet. Buy a few different brands(all great for deer), and see what best suits you.Shotgun slugs have come a long way in the past 10-15yrs. Shotguns are now as accurate as anyone would need for shots out to 200yds. This will cover you for most deer hunting conditions Canada has to offer.

P.S.I prefer a 20,to a 12 for a slug gun.
