Remington 870 Cantilever Deer with 18-1/2" fully rifled barrel.
At 50 yards, with the 20 gauge, the deer are just as dead as when you
hit them with a 12 gauge. The Federal 3" 275 gr. Barnes "Tipped" Expander
hits harder than a 240gr. 44 Mag even out at 100 yards.
Oh, and it's a lot lighter & more compact to carry than the 12 !

The Expanders are a sabot/slug so you'd need a rifled barrel to shoot them effectively. As the Challengers are a rifled slug, I take it you are shooting a smooth bore?
I have a 20 gauge Remington with a cantilever slug barrel, but I shot both of my deer this year with my 12 gauge 1100, someone was borrowing the 870. If you have the money the core-lokt bullets that I recovered from sighting in looked like they would be up to the task.
No, my Mossy 500 is a fully rifled ported cantilever bbl. I would'nt say they are a 'rifled slug' as they have characteristics similar to Brenneke & Hastings slugs.
They work extremely well in rifled & smoothbore bbl's.

While typically used in smothbore shotguns, it's good to hear they are working for you in a rifled barrel. They often don't.
Brenneke slugs are typically refered to as rifled but even that is confusing now a days as Breneke also makes sabot slugs. If they have fins on them and no sabot, they are typically called rifled slugs.......

I hunt with a 20ga. Rem.870 for close in work. I nailed a doe with the solid copper sabot slug from Remington, and it knocked the doe ass over applecart! I bought it specifically for 50 yd and under, or for heavy cover terrain. Anything over that, I tend to use rifle. Because mine is the "youth" model plain jane birch stocked, I put on a decelerator recoil pad which both gave me an adult length of pull, and tames it considerably when firing slugs. I also took off the sights, and put on a Bushnell holosight, and it's proven to be a dandy rig for it's designated purpose.
On the box it says, quote "The incredible efficiency of this rifled slug (ok you were right
) permits it to be fired out of a smoothbore or rifled barrel, in any choke configuration without decreasing it's incomparable accuracy & stopping power" I have'nt tried these yet, so I have no idea. I only bought them because when I was in Ontario for 6weeks all the locals swore by them. But if they don't group worth $hit then I'll go back with the Remington Copper Solids. Like I mentioned, they only cost me $18/20 so no loss. And besides, I have'nt seen them anywhere here out west. I tell ya what. I'll post my results in the spring.

Sounds good huntsman......be interesting to see how they shoot for you....I'm guessing you'll be going back to the sabots.

I switched over to a 20gauge for deer about 6 years ago.I first bought a 870 20gauge with a 20 inch barrel it was good for what it was but the barrel was not long enough,them I bought Benelli Nova Pump with a 24inch barrel the action was better on the 870 but the grouping was outstanding with that longer barrel.Now I am using a Thompson pro hunter with a 28inch 20gauge barrel and that is one great shooting gun mind you only one shot.
I would buy a 870 20gauge slug gun if I could find a longer barrel.Browning I think came out with a new 20gauge semi with a longer barrel,I will be checking it out this coming spring.
I still have the 870 20gauge my little girl will be using it in a couple of more years.
