I'm in the process of buying a new 20 gauge break action shotgun for upland and recreational clays.

Most current 20 gauge guns are chambered for 3" shells, and this fits with what is happening with availability of non-toxic shells. However, there are those who feel strongly that a 20 gauge gun should be chambered for 2 3/4" shells, and that the trend toward 3" is just a marketing trend that should be resisted.

I'm looking for enlightenment, or at least people's thoughts on this :)

A 20 ga. chambered in 3" shells, like any other shotgun gauge, is capable of using 2 3/4" shells . The 3 " chamber just gives it that much more versatility.

The only time I'd agree with that statement is if ordering a custom gun at a specific weight. Magnum shells require a higher proof and weight and size differences between a 3" and a 2-3/4" gun are frequently noticeable. For a mass market o/u however I don't think it makes a difference and you have the flexibility of using 3" shells if the situation requires it.
