20 gauge defensive shotgun

Hi all,

I’m looking to buy a 20 gauge defensive style shotgun. Short barrel (18.5 inches), semi auto (although I would settle for a pump), traditional pistol grip, synthetic stock.

Anyone have any good ideas as for makes and models?

Thanks!

I am a big fan of 20G. It does everything a 12G does. I have had a few 870s, and some Turkish guns too. Not much difference between 12&20 regarding weight or recoil IMO.

Correction...who do you think you need to defend yourself from, and why? Personally I don't know anyone in this country who has ever needed to defend themselves in their own home with deadly force. Gang bangers, yes. Druggies, yes. Ordinary honest citizens, no. Maybe someone needs to rethink their choice of friends and associates or just come back to the real world.

You would probably re think your statements if you have been victim of a home invasion. I can guarantee you I am not the first person to be victim of mistaken identity nor the last.

Problem in this country the crooks have more rights, they know exactly what story to tell the police if caught and have rehearsed it with their crew in the event they are caught so the homeowner is victimized a second time while they get off scott free.

This one is a little longer barrel but ti holds 7+1 rounds and operates well

Martin isn't bringing these in anymore (not sure why), but I still have mine, kinda sorta. My wife has taken it over as her camp gun when we're hiking/camping in bear country:

She absolutely loves it. It's small and lightweight enough to take hiking, and the traditional stock helps keep the lines clean, and also means she can African Carry (pistol grips get in the way of this style carry/draw), we practice this together every spring. Don't have a video of her doing it, but you can see the gun beside me here:

If you can find one of these on the EE, I'd say go for it. They're a nice, well made gun. Mine has held up well for the past few years.

I think if she knows how to use a shotgun well, something like the Mossberg SA-20 (mentioned already) might be a good choice. Fortunately, I've never had to actually use a shotgun in a defensive role (though there was one time I sincerely wished I had one)...BUT...I can imagine if I had to, the desire for maximum firepower might trump my concerns about recoil. Like most hunters I've met, you barely seem to notice noise/recoil when "in the moment"...I'd have to wonder if you'd feel the same in this role? No idea.

If the gun isn't physically too heavy, a 12ga Remington Versamax is one of the lightest-recoiling shotguns I've ever used, including single-shot .410, 16ga pump, 20ga pump/semi, 12ga pump, etc. It's my 15 year old son's favourite gun to shoot. There is a new version (R12?) coming out that is shorter/tactical, I don't know whether or not it's coming to Canada..I think so? My experience with any other modern 12ga semi is just about zero...but this 12ga Versamax I have chugs along like a sewing machine. Super easy to shoot, but it's weight probably plays into the very light, felt recoil.

Perhaps the link is an ad. But until its proven that it's just fake news and stats, there is still a tiny risk that ordinary honest citizens could be victims of a home invasion.

I have the weatherby PA-08tr in 20ga . Works great . We have it as a truck gun . very few moving parts . I got it for a very reasonable $177 at Dante sports .

I too have a Dominion Arms 20g. It's extremely solid and shoots great. I'd have to say that #3 buck is marginal at best but #1 works well. Slugs out of my short barrel shoot POA which is nice. All too often I find shotguns with short barrels require holding the bead very low under whatever I am trying to hit.

Canada ammo has Turkish made 'Fedarm' brand in 20 gauge, that is basically the same as the Mossberg SA-20 and Weatherby SA-459 20 gauge. Both the Mossberg and Weatherby were manufactured in Turkey. I have 2 Mossberg's in 20, and my brother has a Weatherby in 20. They don't seem to like Winchester ammo, but eat Federal and Remington ammo all day long. Might be a break in issue, as all guns are still very low round count. The ergonomics are excellent. On sale right now, $100 off! Only $314, is a steal of a deal for a semi auto, honestly.

Clearly you don't live in the Country. Where the officer on duty, might be several towns over, and 20mins away.

About five years ago a bachelor farmer in a rural area not far from Bonnyville got a knock on his door one afternoon. Unfortunately it was a home invasion by POS brother and sister criminals with long records of similar anti social activities. The poor old fellow was killed and the robbers fled. The idiot brother was quickly caught and his disgusting sister was discovered in Edmonton while driving a stolen vehicle from the farm.
The victim was a hard working farmer who minded his own business. Zero connection to the home invaders that lived in a nearby reserve.

I have a mossberg 510 mini super bantam which i added an adult stock with slip on limb saver pad. It is a very compact and light shotgun. Functions as well as any mossberg and the barrel has choke tubes if you want to take it in the bush and take some longer shots. They also make another youth model that holds 5 but like the 510 better as it saves on weight. The factory stock has spacers but is too short for me im 5 11” with med build. I have seen kids use the small stocks quite comfortably.

Not looking for an argument or doubting your word about the dangerous world you live in, but it certainly doesn't sound like anywhere I have lived in four provinces over my lifetime. If I felt that insecure in my home I would ....
Move, across town, new town, new province.....
Find new straight honest friends.......
Get some counselling.......
Quit watching all those cheap movies.......
Or maybe just curl up in the corner and suck my thumb.

Edit: Everyone on CGN understands what you are really alluding to in your last sentence. Some people can have a civilized exchange but others not so much. Perhaps, just perhaps you are mentally challenged.
But that's not for me to figure out.

Welcome to my ignore list Mister...
