Enjoy your thumb, I'll keep a defensive gun close at hand, which I do legally. Some folks live in areas where the police response is measured in parts of an hour or longer, rather than a few minutes, if they get the address right. Some folks live in areas where predators threaten their live stock or are a threat to life. Not everyone wants your life. If you live in an urban environment, which seems to be the case, it may prove not to be as safe as you believe it to be, and the police response might not be as quick as you hope. I hope you never find out, but if your home is targeted by violent criminals, you are going to have a bad day.

- my house in the city is in a good neighborhood, odds of home invasion are 0.0001% so guns are triple locked and well out of reach of everyone
- family property way out in the sticks, odd of home invasion (pretty low but bigger than city) odds of animals that need addressing (avg one every 2-3 yrs) so we keep something handy all the time
 
A Little Beaver 870 DM sounds perfect for you. I recently got one and it's awesome. It's 12ga and not 20ga, but is pretty light weight due to the short barrel and you can always use low recoil buck/birdshot. Why it's ideal:
