I’m Thinking about adding a 20 gauge to the fleet for hunting small game and grouse . I prefer to get a pump action, I have it narrowed down to either a Mossberg 500 or the new Benelli nova compact . I’d like it to be a shorter barrel as it will be riding on the quad mostly . What would you pick between the 2 ? And do you have any other suggestions

Both are reliable but it comes down to which one fits you better. Personally I own an 870 LW special as well as an 870 express youth which fits my son. After picking up a few 20ga thats all I shoot now. I also shoot a Weatherby Element and a Boito coach in 20ga.
Browning BPS youth/ladies model in 20g with the 22” barrel might be worth picking up if you can find a used one, fantastic shotgun and much higher build quality than either model you have mentioned. They are built like a tank and a super smooth pump action

Not too sure about current production, but they did produce an express youth model. Mine has a 21 inch or so barrel with choke tubes and a scaled down stock. It was produced in the mid 2000’s. With a slip on pad I would think it would fit an adult. They also produced a youth compact model but the stock is so short only a kid could use it unless you replace the stock. Mossberg also produces a few kids bantam models.

Agree ..... Pretty hard to beat a BPS in 20ga if you want a pump. Well built, tang safety, nice shotguns, with bottom eject check off boxes.
Yessir, the shotty in my avatar is an OLD Cooey, cut down to 18.5" and threaded for chokes.
I run all manner of chamber reducers in it and the grouse pictured fell to a .410 round.
I have also shot plenty of bunnies with 9mm out of it.

I know exactly what you’re talking about . One of them is locally . Trying to get a deal.. they definitely aren’t cheap used at allThere are 3 or 4 20g BPS on GP at the moment including an upland special, they aren’t cheap but they certainly are nice shotguns

I can't give you a perfect answer because my favorite 20 gauge is a 20-in barreled side-by-side and it's my favorite grouse gun of all time. I also have a Benelli Nova in 12 gauge and it's quite good. I'm sure in 20 gauge it would be better than my side-by-side but I have a bunch of guns and I like them all for different reasons. I'm a very casual clay pigeon shooter, but I noticed that when I went from an 870 to the Benelli Nova, I hit a few more here and there. It's quite a good shotgun for the price.
The mossberg has more options. Barrels from 18.5 to 22 to 24 to 26 to 28" and various stocks. As well as rifled barrels.
