I just bought my wife a mossberg 500 20 gauge duck and deer combo and i am thinking about using it first week of deer season. before i go and waste a bunch of money and slugs i was wondering how the pattern and shoot so on and soforth, and what you figure the max distance. anyways if anyone that has some info that will help me that would be great.

Each gun shoots different try them all,if the barrel is rifled get sabots if available.(not sure)
If you don't shoot how would you know were the guns point of aim is.

Assuming your have a rifled barrel I would would put Remington copper solids on my list of slugs to try. If you are lucky your gun will shoot them well and you will have a solid slug that is nice to shoot. The only down side is that they tend not to expand a whole lot, but if your shot is well placed (which is easier because they are softer shooting than other slugs) should be enough to seal the deal.

Be sure to give us an update on how your gun shoots.

Moose, I have a Mossy 500 combo such as yours in 12 ga. Shoots sabot slugs very well through the rifled barrel. As crowca said, every gun shoots different, so get a couple boxes and have a go. You should be inside of 2" at 100yrds with a little practice.

ok i am going to give it a try this weekend. Sorry I didnt explain it is it is a rifled barrel with open sights so i dont know if i will be able to go to one hundred yards. And should i shoot 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells

my amish friends shoot 20 gauge slugs out to 125 yards using rifle sighted smooth bore guns with deadly accuracy on deer. it works for them and will work for you . find a slug your gun likes and practice . best of luck and have fun .

I shoot with a Remington 11-87 20ga. I started with the Rem. sabots and then went to the Winchester partition gold. I now shoot the Hornady sabots. Of all the 3 I like the Hornady the best and they are $7 bucks cheaper. Try them and you will find them sufficiant out to at least 125 yrd. Good luck with the hunt. Bob

I have 20G and shoot rifled slugs through smooth bore. I shot bear and deer this season with this setup, one shot was at 35 yards and another one at about 40. While at the range I can put everything into a paper plate size group at 100 yards. I am no happy but can't complain either, considering the whole thing costed me 100$. With new firearm and rifled barrel and sabot slugs I wouldn't worry at all about taking it to 100 yards. Advertized velocity for rifled slugs is about 1600 fps which is flat enough of a trajectory, basically laser beam up to 100 yards.
