So, let me k is if this is a stupid idea, but would there be an accurate load posible putting a 20 guage fostner lug in a 12 guage shot cup, some cardboard to keep it centred and a good high velocity powder load behind it?
The potential advantages would be this: 1) faster slug, with a better ballistic coefficient than the equal weight 12 guage slug( 300 grain or 3/4 oz for the sake of discussion) 2) a slug smaller than a tighter choke than you would want to fire a 12 guage through.

My thoughts are this; it seams to me that slugs from a smooth bore loose stability, and loos their marginal accuracy when they go trans-sonic at about 75 yards. A smaller faster slug would stay super sonic out to 100 yards. And if it could be fired through fixed choke shotguns that would also be good

Would this have the potential to be an accurate load, kinda like a sabot load for smooth bore shotguns?

Just thinking of a potential 100 yard slug load.

Shooting a commercial slug in a full choke is ok. That is why the slug is soft lead and has grooves in it- so it can compress.

You are describing a sabot slug concept. Try some commercial sabot rounds. When I did I found accuracy was 2 would hit the mark and one would be way off. They wanted rifling.

Try it. Have fun and learn what works.

The ammunition makers have produced a large amount of extremely accurate and high performance products as far as slugs and sabots go. Please don't continue with your current quest as I see it is an accident waiting to happen.

You can safely shoot foster slugs through chokes, up to a full choke with zero issues. In fact I find mod or full to be my most accurate for slugs, depending on the brand of choke. Mod for Rem choke or truchoke and full for winchoke.

What about loading a 16 gauge slug in a 12 gauge with a turkey choke? To me, this is a similar idea to the squeeze bore.

Consider your slug might splatter or fragment early at the new speed and not penetrate enough. Do you cast your own?

Watch a few episodes of taofledermaus on youtube it may give some idea as to performance . they test all kinds of different slugs for penetration and accuracy .

What about sourcing a thicker walled wad to encapsulate the slug? I know a factory loaded 12 ga sabot slug is of considerably smaller diameter then a Lyman slug that fits in an appropriate wad. Is 3D printing the thicker walled wad an option?

Thanks for the input. I get that it is the same, functionally, as a sabot slug. The main difrence is sabot slugs are not designed to stabilize without rifling,
I get that the best way to find out would be to test it. I see no safety hazards, unless I exceed powder loads.

Anyway, in the opinion of this with more experience than I; 1) would this produce a significantly faster slug? 2) would the smaller 3/4 oz slug stay supersonic out further than a standard slug? And 3) would that speed, and increase in supersonic distance translate to better 100 yard accuracy.

Also, is there anywhere in Brandon manatoba that sells shotshell reloading supplies, especially slugs? Or the best place on line to order them from? If it works great, I would get a mold, if it isn’t as good as a 12 guage slug, I would get a 12 guage mold.
