20 inch 7mm08 barrel...too short?

We will have to see what it likes but something starting at 178gr and moving north. I am not a fan of recoil nor will my shoulder tolerate it, so brake it is.

Was originally thinking some form of magnum. had a 7RM before and it was a gem. 300WM would definitely solve the hitting issue but the recoil would end up too harsh for me even with a brake.

Was in WSS and they had a Ruger American in 30-06 - time to test a rifle and some LR bullets in a much used but vastly overlooked chambering.

Also, I would only really gain 100 to 150yds with the 300WM. Not much for all that boom and bluster. I really don't need to worry about hitting fur beyond 600yds.

I have to agree on the 7-08 being one sweet little cartridge. Myself I'd choose the longer barrel just to keep velocities up...probably doesn't really make any difference on game but the way I look at it is why limit the cartridge.
Just used a Remington 700, 24" varmint barrelled 7mm-08 with 139 SST's and 43.5 gr. of varget to drop a bull moose at 357 yards (ranged on bushnell fusions)...the 7mm-08 just seems to work WAY better for downing game than one would think!
cheers

If you can get that .223 accurately to a mile what that heck is gonna happen when you start playin with that 30-06???

Easier to spot the impacts :)

Actually, I am getting back into hunting and have my SR walkabout rig in that short axis. SOOOOOOO, I "need" a longer shooting cut block rig and I have been very curious about these new Rugers. The 30-06 was there and it will fit the ballistics needs to 600yds. Now to see if it shoots.

After launching alot of lead towards the horizon, you figure out that it pretty much all gets there. Bigger bullet going faster, just makes the trip with far less fuss. We have been plinking with 338's and 300gr monsters. Even at 1 mile, it is pretty much a dial and shoot... boring actually.

I think the next silliness with be the 22LR to at least 500yds. It has already been done to that distance so no biggie but I have a nice spot where 500 to 700yds shots can be spotted pretty easy. With a quality gun and ammo, it is basically an effort in scope adjustment and wind management.

Nice to see there are some other people out there that like the 7-08. I am a big fan of 7X57 and have a collection of milsurps in that caliber.
I have been using a Rem 700 BDL with a SS 22" light contour barrel and love it. I now have to learn to reload for it.
I have another 2 or 3 Remington 7-08 barrels in my shop that I picked up on the EE just in case I run across another re-barrel candidate.
