20 inch barrel for 30-06? Effectiveness? Pro's and Con's

Isn't the possession limit 5?

That a 75 foot seine boat that my uncle salvage in the background
The crew of 5 is working on the deck you can't see
It is a Haida boat we wait till the last week or so at the end of rut wen we make this annual trip the only way in and out is by boat or float plain
We just hunt one or two days depending on weather

You are right it a 5 possession limit and 15 total for non-Haidas this hunt is for the entire community most of it get given away

This hunt is necessary or the deer will eat the Island clean of all the natural medicines with no Predators We are the only way to keep population in check

Balance should be kept in mind when considering a short barrel. A clubby feeling rifle is slow to get on target because it doesn't point naturally. Balance can be manipulated by selecting a heavier contour barrel, selecting full length wood, or by shortening or removing material from the butt.

Velocity loss isn't usually an issue, a 150 at 2700 or a 180 at 2550 are deadly combinations. But if it really bothers you, choosing a heavier bullet results in a lower percentage of velocity drop, compared to a long barrel rifle. A heavier bullet is driven by a smaller powder charge, and has a lower velocity in the first place.

Wow thank you everyone! I think I will continue with my plans to shorten my barrel, the con's don't seem to carry much weight. I like to hunt on foot and enjoy calling an animal in, so range isn't a issue, I find that when I call an animal in it is in a relaxed state and I can place a proper shot. I typically don't take a shot past 200 yards, as I have heard horror stories of bad shots and wounded animals.

If i was really worried about weight and pack ability I would lay off the Beers! which is way I pack Glenlivet.

I spent a couple weeks on Haida Gwaii in Sandspit traveling all over a few years ago! Amazing island! I cant wait to return and take my family there!

Again thank you for all the input! what a great site!

If I was going for a 20" barrel in a short .30 calibre hunting rifle I would prefer it in a .308 rifle instead of a .30-06.

They both will have a 150 to 165gr. bullet leaving the muzzle at about the same speed as the .308 will have nearly a 3/4 inch of extra rifling for the same length tube and the .308 will also be generally lighter, shorter and have less muzzle blast from burning less powder.

Thats my choice too, should have one in my hands soon..

I wish more manufacturers would build factory rifles with shorter barrels, 16-18" for 308 and 18-20" for 30-06. This is for the type of hunting in BC. 22-24" is a magnum length and anything longer should only be on 338 Lapua and 50 BMG.

But again, just my opinion for where/how I hunt

There are shorter barrelled rifles out there not necessarily in a persons particular choice of brand but nevertheless some good ones.
Requires a bit of shopping.

its not such a bad thing trimming a barrel back on a old rifle
I did that with a old worn out 22 it extended the life of the barrel .
It was just a inch of barrel that was worn rifling from cleaning after I cut and re-crown the rifle was just like new

I have had a model 600 Mohawk .308 for 30 years .there have been a lot of other rifles that have come and gone . the 600 is just the best rifle for where I hunt . short barrel quick handling and plenty of gun in N S . A 20 " 30-06 would be every bit as good for coastal hunting in B C I would think .

I have a m1917 in 30-06 at 21" and it is extremely accurate with the original 1917 barrel and 150 gr bullets going 2900.
I have been liking short barrels more and more. Recently a 21" 375h&h, 22" 338 win mag. Other than a small velocity gain, there is nothing I like more about long barrelled guns. Soon a 27" 6.5/284 will get trimmed to 24" and I might want to use it more

I don't think I have a rifle in my collecton with a barrel over 21". Very small velocity difference between 20" or 21" and 24". The handiness factor outweighs the small velocity drop for me. Rule of thumb in 30-06 is 35 fps drop per inch down.

Its a bit off topic I picked up a use Leopold custom 3x9 Ballistic Turret from EE
I am wondering how much ballistic difference on a scope that is calibrated for 308 ballistic turret is going to make on a 308 with a 14 or 15" barrel ?
