Painted the whole thing silver?
Could be aluminum.
On the other hand, might be cadmium, which is not good to handle a lot. Used to do a lot of pretty things with it before they understood the risks involved.
Sine 'em up nice and coat 'em with some kind of clear preservative. They will look good and you can always take the stuff off if you really want to. You can get just about any clear-coat off with the right chemical and still not require buffing.
BTW guys, you can degrade fibreglass epoxy into a whitish powder, even long after it has set-up. Just paint it repeatedly with acetone. Great for that bedding job you screwed up.
You can also use bedding epoxy to repair that unrepairable Bakelite radio of your grandfather's.... the one you dropped. Remove oil from Bakelite where the repair is to go, do the repair with bedding compound, stain and a tiny bit of superfine sawdust, stain to match bakelits right after it has set up, coat of oil to restore original appearance and you can't tell it was ever broken. Saved MY butt more than once!
But check what your rounds are plated with before handling them a heck of a lot. I have seen bayonets plated with cad, US and Canadian. Not good stuff.
Most important of all: have fun!
