20 Yard Bull

No green score yet but the fellow who is mounting the rack is a Boone & Crockett measurer and i think Pope and Young uses the same system . There may be a score but i haven't talk to brother in days . I think he said 49 inch inside spread . This is brothers 9th moose with a bow but this one is the biggest . The other bulls just had paddles and slightly larger that he never kept .

Several times he has arrowed a bull to have it run off and then call it right back for another dose of medicine . Rutting bulls are thinking of only one thing .

About 4 years ago he set up in a large clearing on the edge of a swamp . In the clearing was a single , large diameter , old tree that was broken off about 15 feet high . He started calling and instantly a small bull charged from the swamp to the tree . The bull ran brother around the tree at least 3 times and then stopped to look at him . Brother stepped back , leaned out and put the arrow in the small bull at 5 yards . The shot was good but the moose took off for the treeline which was about 100 yards away in the closest direction . It dropped 25 yards before the treeline . As it was running out , brother was trying to call it back , but the small bull was having none of it .

On another occasion both brothers were hunting together with one brother shooting video as the other brother called . A moose was arrowed in the chest 3 times , ran off 3 times and was called back 3 times when the 4th arrow took him down , and it's all on video .

For the guys thinking about getting into bow hunting , my brothers are fanatics . The bows are tuned in June and they shoot at least one evening per week . By July they are shooting 3 evenings per week and by August and into September they are shooting 5 evenings per week . They shoot in the clothing they hunt in and shoot from the ground and from the roof of the garage . They shoot kneeling and standing . They shoot from point blank to 60 yards .
By the time hunting season begins eack of them can put 5 arrows out of 5 into the Ace of Spades at 50 yards and 5 for 5 into a 6 inch circle at 60 . The last month of practise is broadheads only . They scout on weekends and both book a week off just to scout before the season opens . Both shoot thier bows at 80 pounds .
Between them they've taken about 20 moose , 20 whitetails and a few bear with thier bows but moose , by far is the most important . While there is an element of luck in any hunt , these guys work very , very hard at it .
I just talked to the other brothers wife this morning and she tells that he has dropped a large bull up by Souix Lookout . No other details or pics yet .

That's a great bull but no way the inside spread is 49" on that bull. I would bet that the spread is around 49-52" outside. That bull should green score somewhere around 180-185" IMHO.

Congrats and great story.

Ian Robinson of Thunder Bay is an official , certified scorer for Boone and Crokett and Pope and Young . He has brother rack and it green scores 191 . I think he told brother that it takes 2 months from the time of the kill to record a certified score . In any case he did tell brother that it's the largest one he's ever scored that was taken with a bow in northwestern Ontario . Aparently the final score , due to shrinkage should be 189 to 190 .

That is a very nice bull, and with a bow no less! WOW!

Just curious, do you count the lengths of the points in the score too?
We were told that you don't.

The rack on mine was 58 4/8 wide but he still "just" made the high 170's gross.

The pans (length and width) must be huge on that sucker!

Way to go!

Noel
