i am loading for a savage 111 and the reccomended seating depth is 3.320" and i am currently at that, and it is jamming into the rifling . it would have to be seated aprox .150-.180" deeper to close the bolt. therefor i am asking as i am aprox 2 gr under max and wondering if i would experience any pressure problems with this? thanks ken

forgot to mention this 30-06.

This seems to be a very simple issue. Book length value means nothing for application in your particular gun. Figure out what length you need to get the ogive just touching the rifling & work around that. The fact that you are 2 grains below max should mean that you have room to go and ample room for the bullet to be seated deeper into the case.

I'd say use your chosen charge, seat the bullet approx. .020 short of the rifling (to start with) and shoot. Unless you're using a really bulky powder and that 200 MK is really long, creating a situation where it crushes/compresses powder, I highly doubt you have a thing to worry about. If you're bent on using that bullet and the powder volume creates a problem, switch to a different, less bulky powder. I honestly can't feature a recommended powder for that bullet, that would present an issue - especially at 2 grains below listed max.

Good luck!

One more thing; if you mess around with "jamming" bullets, you run a much higher risk of excessive pressures than you do with deeply seated bullets. Leave the jamming to the benchresters.

One of the secrets to making SMK bullets (Being match king bullets, I am assuming you are looking for accuracy?) work is finding out where they are in relation to the lands. Being a tangent ogive bullet, they don't need to be jammed to work well (unlike many VLD/Secant Ogive bullets) If you can get to the lands and just touch not jam, then load develop...find a powder load that produces best results and then back of in 5 thou increments. i would be willing to bet you will find these bullets like being about 20 thou off the rifling.
