200 M deer cartridge.

Hmmmm i don’t hunt deer… but if i did, and if i was a new hunter and needing to buy a rifle, maybe one of the new 6.5…
But me being me i would go with something like 6.5x55, 7x57, maybe 257 bob, or even 25-06… there is so many choices that it is a bit overwhelming what to decide on!!

When my wife wanted her own deer/black bear rifle we found the rifle that worked for her and she was happy with, then purchased it in a caliber that she could handle and fit the job which happened to be 243win. If a 25cal or 7mm08 had been available in that particular rifle that’s what would be in the safe instead.

The 257 Roberts (257 Bob), is a highly underestimated caliber. I used to work with a fellow who used this caliber for moose, he never had any problems.

My stepson also harvested a cow elk with his 25-06, another underestimated caliber. Both of these would make excellent 200 yard deer rifles.

With Hornady's Lever Evolution ammunition, a 32 Winchester Special has also killed WT bucks at 200 yards. Shot placement is of course crucial, but in the hands of a skilled shooter, it definitely works........:)

In my safe, rifles are species-specific in the effort of getting each out for a walk-about at least
.338 mag did it for the bull elk, 30-06 for the moose/mulie hunts, but now they are closed local so the .243 comes out for whitetail
Win M70 carbine in blued/wood has been tradition, but may try with the Ruger 96/44 if things are right

Whenever I look at the numbers and think about it for a second, I’m amazed that 7-08 isn’t the top deer cartridge.
But I don’t own one haha.

Lots of mention of the Queen’s calibre 257 Roberts. Something in this power band seems right for a dedicated deer rifle.

For myself a pitfall of cartridge selection is the myth of the mixed hunt: what if …?
With that in mind a 6.5 > 6

7mm08 is a great cartridge no doubt, but until recently metric-named cartridges just don't sell that well in North America.

My favorite deer cartridge is and will forever be the 257 wby. However a hard limit of 200 yards would be be an opportunity for me to use something that I’d normally be nervous about limiting my effective range by carrying ( relatively high chance of longer shots in areas I normally hunt ). I would probably choose my 444 marlin or maybe the sharps 45-70.

well, I can only comment on my experience with 1 deer.

I instastopped my 1 deer at 330 yards with a 6.5 Creedmoor. so if you are shooting 200 or less, it stands to reason the 6.5 will work just fine too.

I'll stick with a .22 gauge if I can ever find one. If it's good enough for Gudie Hutchings it's more than adequate for me. It's strange I never see them on the EE. The owners never want to sell them.

In the meantime I use a 336 Marlin in 30-30 or my Savage .308.

If my Crypto Receiver set shows up I have the parts to build a .300 Blackout rifle. It's cool and I'm sure it will piss off the libtards. Eventually I'd like to build a 6.5 Grendel.
