Hi All,

I sighted this in a few weeks ago at 100 yards and got 3-4 nice 1.5 to 2.25" groups. I then plotted to go out to 200. I did a little research and found data on the 22lr stingers that said they dropped 25.5" at 200 if the gun was sighted in at 100.

So I made up at target about 24" wide and about 50" high with a 4" red bull at the top and a second 4" red bull exactly 25" below the second. The idea was to aim at the top one with my gun and hopefully hit the bottom one. If I missed, at least then I could use the mil dots on my scope to figure out a better hold over.

Yes, it is winter and we have to find something to do :)

So the only day I get free to do so is this afternoon. 15km/h NE winds and snow but WTF, I am goin's out.

So I take the first ten shots....

I get a "group" about 8" low of the intended target and 3-4" to the right.

Next round I correct my hold, I estimate based on the 8.5"x11 sheets of paper I taped together and try to correct for elevation. So I take another 10 shots....

Not bad for elevation and with some imagination, I can call them groups. So I do the same hold on the top target as well....

Okay, none in the red but some appear to have hit the cardboard right across from the bull. I take that as a good elevation adjustment. Now to work on that windage. (did I mention the 15km/h wind....)

So using the paper width of 8.5" I figure aiming at the side of the paper with the same vertical hold, should put me on the bull....lets see....

Target one:

Not bad, 4 out of 25 in the red.... :) 20+ on the same sheet.

Target two:

5 out of 25 in the red, 19 or so on the paper.

Day at the range....$5 in gas and $12 worth of 22's
Having fun in the winter....priceless :)

Next attempt will be balloons and/or clays attached to the target stands. Less walking involved....yes, I should buy a spotting scope....

Pick the ammo that shoots the best groups at 50m, and 100m, not the ammo that shoots the flattest.

Try some CCI Standard Velocity and I bet you get better groups, mind you a bit more holdover may be necessary. ;)

Looks like " fun?" in a winter wonderland. Well done. Too bloody cold around here to even think of shooting outside. Your range report confirms my suspicions about the gopher snipers at 200. There's a reason to limit .22 rf to 100. So many variables with the lowly cartridge, being consistent at longer ranges isn't realistic. We have a gong at just over 200, I'm pleased just to hear the ping once in a while.

Burris Signature rings with offset inserts +20 in the rear & -20 in the front. This would get you on target without maxing out the scopes elevation adjustment. I'm betting you would tighten those groups with std vel ammo I like SK Std+ or for more informal use Federal 510 works.

We use this setup at SGC to shoot metallic pigs at 200m.

I've had great luck with CCI SV's out to 200 yards in my 10/22. I've used a correction of about 27.5 MOA from a 50 yard zero to save you some leg work.

Sorry to hear that your marksmanship basics and knowledge of the simplest cartridge are lacking and you can't handle the cold.

SKS, is that EOSC that you were shooting at? If it is, how is that range? Are there many people shooting there this time of year? Do you need to volunteer to be a member there? You can PM me if you would rather.

Thanks and nice shooting!

I have the btvs, once sighted in at 200yds, with ammo my gun likes, I hit water full pop cans off my fence posts and knock over my steel silhouettes. I do however have an s3 10-50x scope and can see what I hit.
In windy days forget about it, but calm days it's totally possible.

Cold winter night, gotta stir the pot a little. Referring to the ballistic charts in the stickies a little side wind goes a long way to spoil the perfect shot, even at a stationary target. No time to fiddle with turrets when gopher shooting, the little bugger will be gone and you'd have to start again. Saw the nasty remark before the edit. Guess I'm old and know my limits. This has gone a little off the op, I'll keep watching for updates to see if the groups tighten up some.

With a truly accurate 22 rifle, and quality ammo, decent groups are possible on a quiet day.
Wind is your nemesis with the lowly 22 rimfire, so you have to watch that factor.

If it is below freezing out, the ammo may present a problem...I have always had the best results
with ammo designed for cold weather use. [Lapua Polar Biathlon, for example.]

However, anyone who thinks a 22 rimfire is too inconsistent for use at 200 yards, has not shot a lot of 22.

I expect [and get] 5-shot groups under 1" at 200 yards regularly enough that gophers are in serious trouble out there.

Couple of groups posted to show the possibilities. [The squares are ½"]

Regards, Dave.
