If I remember correctly, the stage briefing said the start was on the audible. So pulling your gun out of the holster before the audible sound would be a match DQ for unsafe gun handling, yes??? If I'm wrong please correct me. I'd really like to know some other points of view.

Movement during or after the verbal commands and before the audible would be creeping, I believe. Although some triggered the beep on ST...AN.... BY...
I still don't get what the advantage is.

Um... well I had 2 people already comment.. 'nuff said there..

That was also the stage where it could be heard "D'oh!" as I forgot that I was setting off the timer.. I remember the "standby" and I sat and waited.. and waited... and "Oh yeah! I have to set it off!". So off I went, dropping a shot here and there.. That reload was interesting... and away I went again..

Next stop.. US Nationals...

That would've been me that did that first I think. I got the idea a few years back from IPSC1. the advantage? reaction is better than action. Since it's a self start stage you have to "act" but using the RO's verbal command "Stand By" as sort of a beep and a reason to go, gives you something to react to, just like the beep. there are people that can probably start just as fast on a self start stage by deciding when to go, but for most of us, reacting to a stimulus to start it faster then thinking about it.

Perfect sense. Normally we react to the beep. When you self start, there is no beep, so many substitute "standby".
