Last June I ordered an STI Eagle 5.0 from Phoenix Range & Gun Shop in Edmonton for use in IDPA competition in Enhanced Service Pistol Division (ESP). I took delivery just before Christmas. Since then I've only had it out to the range a few times; mostly testing loads.
I used it this weekend for the first time in a match at the Nevada IDPA State Championships. Well, I won my Class! (Sharpshooter) I beat out a dozen other competitors so as a result, I'm getting bumped up to Expert class in ESP.
Had a great time! Weather was HOT and sunny. Was squadded with my buddy Ryan T. from Texas and Greg B., our very own Albertacoyotecaller here on CGN. Ryan came in 2nd Expert in Custom Defensive Pistol (CDP) and Greg came in 5th Marksman in his division (can't recall if he registered in SSP or ESP) and this was his first ever IDPA match! Well done Greg.
Anyhow, I've got lots of photos and I'll post them as soon as I'm able.
Here I am sitting in the San Fran airport on Gunnutz. Waiting on Standby for 10 hours.
The Match was great and I will be returning next year. I took 5th place in ESP like Mass said. I might of placed better if it wasn't for a friend helping me load mags and forgetting about only loading ten rounds or the fact that my front sight almost came off on the last course of fire.
However, it gave me a good idea on how matches are run and what to expect next year and allowed me to run into some good people and good shooters.
Mass did a good job on placing first in his division.
I have a lot of video but no pics but I know Mass was taking pictures like crazy so I am sure some will be up soon.
I awoke Monday morning at 4 am to leave Vegas and arrive in Grande Prairie at 9:15 on Tuesday morning only to have to haul ass back down to Edmonton to attend a dinner. Went to bed at 1:00 am Wensday morning. All that time with no sleep! I was ready to shoot another match or someone!
I can see why people get tasered waiting in airports!
I placed 5th out of ten. I really only went down to shoot my first match and see how the match is run. I thought I placed okay. I know I could have done better but had some equipment failures and some magazine loading problems as well. Note to self. Don't let anyone else load your mags for you!
Oh well, next year I have a plan already. I am going to try to make Idaho and Washington this year and pick some matches up in Ontario and Michigan.
I had a great time and recommend it to any new shooters thinking of going. You can come away with a good understanding on how matches work and little tips on how to shoot a match. Lots of good people to learn from.
No sooner did I get home then I get hit with a gastro-intestinal 'bug' that puts me out for the count for two days! (on the upside, I've lost 8 lbs.) Anyhow, here are some photos from the match:
Greg B. (Albertacoyotecaller) on Stage 1 - Nevada Standards. This was a two string stage that had the competitor shooting 'free style' on string one and 'strong hand' and 'weak hand' on string two.
Bryan R. shooting string two of stage one. Bryan is a deputy with the LA County Sheriff's Dept. He works in the firearms training unit.
Me shooting 'weak hand' on string two of Stage 1.
Lee L. waiting for the start signal on stage 2 - Home On The Range Invasion. Lee is also a deputy with the LA County Sheriff's Dept.
Jeff M. drawing on Stage 2. Jeff is an Ex-pat Canadian originally from Toronto. He now lives in San Diego.
My buddy Ryan T. from Texas shooting the first target on Stage 2.
Greg B. shooting T2 at Position 2 on Stage 2. The remainder of the stage was shot inside the 'house' and getting photos wasn't possible.
Me drawing on the start signal on Stage 3 - All Stars.
Greg B. moving to position 2 on Stage 3.
Lee L. at position 4 on Stage 3.
Me waiting for the start signal on Stage 4 - 7 Wolves. This was a challenging stage with the targets 30 yards distant.
Greg B. engaging targets on Stage 4.
Ryan T. shooting string 3 of Stage 5 - Rock & Sock 'Em Retention Drill. Each target was engaged with two rounds from 'retention' on a seperate string of fire.
Me waiting for the start signal on Stage 6 - On The Mend. The stage had you watching TV with your strong arm in a sling and your loaded pistol on the table.
Greg B. engaging targets on Stage 6.
Me waiting for my turn on Stage 7 - Rock A Bye Baby.
Ryan T. engaging the initial targets while cradling the 'baby' on Stage 7.
Greg B. engaging targets from low cover on Stage 7.
A view of Stage 8 - Saturday In The Park. The stage had the shooter start seated in an 'outhouse' (door just visible on the left in the photo). On the start signal the outhouse door was kicked open and a popper was engaged to activate a 'swinger'.
Jeff M. engaging the last set of targets on Stage 8.
Me engaging targets while withdrawing on Stage 9 - ATM.
Greg B. re-engaging targets with 'head shots' on Stage 9.
Me engaging the first set of targets on Stage 10 - Coyote Real Ugly Bar.
Greg B. just finishing Stage 10. IIRC, this is where Greg got a procedural for having too many rounds loaded in his mag.
Ryan T. engaging targets on Stage 11 - Pipe Dream - a.k.a. How Lucky Are you. The stage procedure gave the shooter the choice of engaging the targets (all with hard cover) with either two rounds to the body OR one round to the head.
Ryan T. waiting for the start signal on Stage 12 - New York Reload. This was the first of two stages where the shooter had to finish the stage with a 'back up gun'. (In this case a S&W Model 60 5 shot J-frame snubby revolver visible on the ground to Ryan's left)
Me engaging the first set of targets from 'low cover' on Stage 12.
Greg B. engaging the last set of targets with the 'back up gun' on stage 12.
Me unloading the Model 60 after finishing Stage 12.
Greg B. engaging targets on the move on Stage 13 - Partner Down.. This stage also had the shooter finishing the stage with a revolver; in this case a 4" S&W Model 64. (Both the revolvers used in the match were given away on the prize table)
Greg B. engaging the last set of targets with the revolver on Stage 13.
Me engaging the first pair of targets 'strong hand only' and in 'tactical sequence' all while withdrawing on Stage 14 - Leaving Las Vegas.
Greg B. looking for his 'dolly full of casino winnings' on Stage 14.
Ryan T. engaging targets on Stage 14. The SO is holding up a finger because Ryan got a procedural for not engaging the targets in 'tactical sequence'.
Me moving to cover to initiate a 'slide-lock reload' on Stage 14.
Greg B. moving to the prone position on Stage 14.
Ryan T. engaging the last set of targets from a prone position on Stage 14.
All in all, another great match. I'll likely make the Nevada State Match again next year and I highly encourage others to join me.
Got an E-mail from Sean of Freedom Ventures the other day in response to an inquiry I made. Last year I registered for the STIContingency Rewards Program. ( http://www.stiguns.com/Contingency/contingency.html ) Since I won my class using an STI gun while wearing an STI shirt (as evidenced in the photos above) at this match; I've qualified for $350.00 worth of STI product!
