2008 Quebec IPSC Provincials

I received a call yesterday and was invited to this party and what a party it is !
As a member of IPSC QC, a proud sponsor of IPSC in Canada and someone who has the opportunity to speak to a variety of shooters classed anywhere between U and GM across Canada, I can honestly say that this thread does not do the QC Provs any JUSTICE at all !
In the opinion of many, the QC Provs are second to the Nationals (and in some cases better then). This is why I felt the need to put this thread into prospective.
There is a difference between Volunteering and working.
Many have no trouble volunteering under their own terms but no one likes to be told they have to work. Volunteering is NOT the same as working.
If everyone would do their part, there would be no issue between volunteering and working.
If you want a guaranteed slot for the QC provs, you need to send in your registration asap regardless of what Province you are from.
In my opinion, if you are INVITED to shoot this match and then asked to work a mandatory 3 hours, if is very much like inviting a friend over for dinner, you order in, when the food arrives you ask him to pay and then have him do the dishes when you are done.
If you register for the match, you know the conditions prior to sending in your registration form and money.
Matches of this level & quality do not get put on by themselves, as in every Province, there are always a few quality guys that you can count on to be there match after match to do whatever is needed. But it is very understandable that these cores guys can get frustrated and disappointed when they realize that they are pulling more then most.

The help that comes from other Provinces in setting up and running the QC Provs has always and will always be appreciated as without these individuals, the matches would not be what they are.
The individuals from other Provinces that have been there for IPSC QC year after Year not by just giving 3 hours but spend complete several days at the range – I say Thank You because IPSC need more individuals like you.
That being said, an IPSC match does not just entail setting up the stages, there is plenty of work that goes on behind the scenes.
Philippe Proulx is one of those rare gems, I have had the pleasure of working with him on MANY occasions – there is nothing Philippe will not do : He will design matches, set-up the matches, weld the poppers, make target holders, do the walk thru, make the score sheets, etc,etc,….. (you get the gist)
I also feel that Philippe’s dry French humor translated in English was not well understood by many.
The 3 Hour work rule was adopted by the committee of IPSC QC = ATPQ (not the FQT as stated) and Philippe was attempting to convey the message with some humor.
IPSC QC does not want individuals to work for them, they need volunteers to ensure that the match run smoothly and on time and IPSC QC does not want the competitor shooting to have to do their own patching and resetting steels and so on, they want the competitor to concentrate on their game. That being said, IPSC QC is looking to lighten the load on the usual volunteers that are there year after year and it is unfortunate that these few dependable individuals feel that they are being forced to Volunteer, when in fact we are trying to get the few sliders that come up with all kinds of excuses why they can’t help out to contribute.
What does working for 3 hours entail ?
Patching
Resetting steel
Painting steel
Resetting props (and there are usually a few)
Scorekeep
Run Stats
Set-up
Tear-down
Repairs to anything that gets shot up or broken
To name a few

When you get to the range asked to be assigned a task or tell them what you would like to do. There is always something to do on the range

You can’t work the match or don’t want to – no problem at all :
As of the Saturday Aug.30th there will be a crew of 10 to 12 guys at EOHC, drop in anytime you want during that week, go see one of the guys and ask him what needs to be done, and get to it – I assure you that you will be there way past your 3 hours, as it is a blast and a bunch of great guys to work with.
If setting up is not an option either, slot yourself Sunday morning and stick around for the tear down – this is the best part – beer starts flowing

The crew setting up drive anywhere from 2 to 6 hours to get to EOHC 7 to 10 days before the match with a caravan of cars and trucks with materials, equipment and machinery– they need rooms to sleep, they need to be fed, gas for their vehicles, pay for materials, equipment, trophies, build props, make score sheets and all this with NO SPONSORSHIP of any kind is accepted.
If you think they are turning a huge profit you are seriously wrong.

At the end of the day, IPSC QC wants you the competitor to spend the day at the range and while you are not squaded give a helping hand.
For the LOVE of IPSC, pls try to understand, good help is already hard to find, all we are asking is for a helping hand to ensure all runs smoothly. And for all of you who have always been there for us, again I say Thank You and pls don’t stop, our sport needs more individuals like you.

We will never be able to please 100% of the competitors a 100% of the time and this is regardless of your class and type of firearm you are using.

Mandatory Volunteering during a match is not new in Canada and a large number of clubs are already doing so and many more are adopting this rule.
Hope to see you at the QC Provs

Very well said BlueDragon.

Im new to IPSC, only 2 matchs so ive just got my Black Badge. I must admit that not only i really like to shoot matchs but i also really like to help with all those tasks you've just mention. Helping with a bunch of peoples who are so dedicated to the sport is not what i call working. So when i go to a match i take the whole day for IPSC and i quit when all the work is done.

Just wanted to say that a 3hres work is nothing compare to what the IPSC Quebec guys, like Philippe, are doing for us by putting on matchs on a regulary bases.

Remember that they also have jobs and families like most people do.

I also think that Philippe deserve the right to call the shots here. If you dont like it, simply dont post and dont go to the Provincial. I just cant believe that a guy like Philippe get flamed with all he has already done for the sport. Some people really need to STFU............seriously.
