200gr Bullets In .308win

Why would 200 grain factory loads be over pressure? I do not understand the event you describe, nor your thinking that 200 grain loads are only for the 06.
that's CIL's loading not mine- all I know when when I opened the breech, there was smoke and the brass was blown out- the primers were also backed out - to me that's all signs of over pressure- as for 200 grains being only for the 06, it's the powder compression thing- the 200 when seated in SOME factory magazines put the bullet into the powder and not on top of it- that extra half inch makes a difference- could have been the rifle(savage 99) 1/12 twist, but I doubt it as it runs 180s just fine and has been all it's life- I got that back in 76 and did a complete work up using 180 slr load(special long range)- the only diff is that I use 180s instead of 175s- I just wanted to try 200s ( always trying to "improve") and everything I've ever read or used said NOT TO USE 200S in a 308 b/c of the powder compression thing- it's all right if you can seat the bullets out far enough so they don't sit in the powder- some do, some don't the savage 99 doesn't- the best explanation I heard is that bullet compresses the powder column underneath so you get a 2 section load, alright on both side, but the middle column is compressed and that's where your overpressure comes from- or at least that's what I've been told- whether it's bunk or not I don't know- .and if you look it up the 180 is right at the edge for a 1/12 twist ( I believe the top end is 1/11.5) and if if you go to 200, it's not supposed to stabilize properly ina 1/12 barrel- now things have changed and there are rifles out there with a 1/10 barrel which WLL stabilize a 200 - they've also got longer magazines

everything I've ever read or used said NOT TO USE 200S in a 308 b/c of the powder compression thing-

Any reloading handbook will give an appropriate load for a given powder and bullet and will stipulate if a load is compressed or not
If someone loads a 200 into a cse with a 180 load, well thats outside the rules just a tad

The ol’ Three oh three is only 2400fps in a 180gr projectile. A 200gr can hit that same velocity in a .308. I’ll give er a try and report back with my findings in a year or so. I hear the boys in Alaska make bison legal loads out of the .308 by loading 200gr projectile.

some of us like to play- why the heck would cil make such a load if it was so dangerous?- well, there is a warning on the box that relieves them of all responsibilty

well , they did ,( they also made a 220) but I didn't buy that one as I KNEW that load wouldn't stabilize- you see cil has no idea as to which rifle you're going to be using it in- they just load for DEMAND and it's up to YOU to play safe- look up your loads, twist, and use the greenhill formula=remember cil/dominion as far as I know hasn't been around for quite some time now that load MIGHT have been ok in their pressure guns which is a whole different world than the real thing- it CERTAINLY wasn't in mine as far as they wouldn't that's pure conjecture on your part, and i'm here to tell you they did
btw I get my recipes from the sniper's hide website which says the m118 slr uses a 175 grain smk moving at 2550 fps- I step on that a little by using a 180 spire at 2650 - that's for the m40/m14dmr
btw, there's a fellow in Summerland ( MYSTIC PRECISION) who used to shoot competitively who u should look up and see what he has to say

My thumper load in a Ruger Scout is 200gr Lapua Mega over RL17. From the 18.7" barrel I am in the 2450 fps range

Interesting if your getting those velocities I'm now thinking I should be able to push the 210gr ABLR even faster than 2600fps in my 30-06.

putting up your ruger scout against my 99is like putting up a model t against a Ferrari- i'm just relating what happened to me- you probably have a1/10 twist, a longer mag and it's a BOLT- the 99s are not known for their strength anyway'

That sounds nice. That’s what I’m aiming for a thumper 200gr in a sighted rifle with about 2400fps. I was thinking GameKings. You know, just a totally unrelated side note. If Sierra where to copy the Berger bullets, they could call it the BergerKing.

Maybe I should work up a load with 200gr bullets. Anyone tried this already? Performance on big game is pretty good or is it not worth the time and just stick with 180grs?
If you've got the 200s on hand, I'd say shoot them up. If you're buying, 180s would be my 1st choice.

I'm doing a 180s RN load for my 760 Carbine. 200s would be a hand full in that little squirt gun.

chamber pressure is chamber pressure. Powder charges can be adjusted

I was a score keeper on KP Bullets FTR team at the worlds F class in 2017. Member here Liberty shooting 1 /11.25 twist
Bartlien 30" HV Palma, Grizzly action
Bullet 200gr Berger Hybrid BC 620, bullets were pointed Hoover pointing system BC 640 app;
Lapua Palma cases
Varget "lots"
Speed 2600+
This combination shot the most V bulls 49 that's keeping them in 5" V bull at 900m only 1 less than the highest open class gun our team came second to a US
team the Bulls captained by James Croft
On Nightforce ballistic calculator this load would have 1508 fp energy at 600 yards, deer sized animal would be toast

Savage 99 the weakest of all action designs a max load in savage 99 should be the starting pad in any manual . All so with the 200 bullit because of its length may have been jammed int the rifling and that would send your pressures up very guickly . Compressed loads do not increase pressure
