200gr Bullets In .308win

I was in visiting Dave of BC Redneck today he had a couple lbs of RL26 on the shelf decided to pass on buying any for over $50 for a can I'll be living with RL17 in my 210gr ABLR 30-06 loads...

No, I've been using H4895 in my 308.

Can't argue with that. I've found better velocities with less casefill using CFE223 under 180's. Have not tried with 190gr+ though.

For bullet choice I would grab a flat-base round nose. That should shorten things up enough to give you some powder space.

Good thinking, so long as he's able to keep it out of the lands. I'm thinking the Dominion ammo problem described earlier in the thread might has had some jam into the lands?

Nothing wrong with 200gr bullets in a 308 for closer distance work. The 303 British used 215gr bullets and those heavy round nose bullets would hit like a freight train and penetrate well. If you have a bunch of 200 gr bullets no reason not to use them.

The 200 grain bullet taxes the 308 case a bit, due to extending into powder space somewhat.
That being said, the 200 can be driven to effective velocities with the right powders.

In the 30-06, 2700 is a realistic velocity with a 200/210 grain bullet, but that is a larger case.
The 308 will get about 2450, with the 99 action about 100 fps slower, so picking the correct
bullet is a good idea. As has been suggested, a flat-based, RN or semi-spitzer would be best.

I have always felt that the 308 case was best suited for bullets from 130 to 180 grain. Dave.
