I've read in two articles and one reload manual that say xtp bullets can/may cause pressure problems. I don't have a Hornady load manual, and if I buy another manual I'll be sleeping with the dog. I'm thinking that I can use start loads for any JHP bullet but I'd like to be sure. Has anyone got Hornady's manual who'd like to share the load data?

(sorry the bullet isn't in the pic but you can see the part number which is 200 gr xtp)

Fall Guy I have the bullets I wanted to make sure I was on the right track load wise.

Bollox thank you, this info lets me know for sure and also allows me to compare load data to what little I've found so far.

I am currently loading 5.8 grs titegroup with either a 200gr XTP or a 200 gr Gold Dot with no problems. That is out of the Speer book for the 200 gr Gold Dot with a max of 6.1 grs if I recall

I would be totally confident in going with a starting load, using a different bullet of a different profile, but the same weight.

As an example, the Lyman 49th edition lists two sets of loads for the 44 Magnum using 240 gr bullets (Speer and Sierra). The bullets are both jacketed hollow point, but different profiles by the two manufacturers give a different bearing length, and a resulting difference in the amount of force to push them out of the barrel. I had a quick look at loads for the two bullets, and the difference between the two bullets with a given powder varied anywhere from 0.0 grs to 1.5 grs, both for starting and max loads.

The usual precautions about starting low, and working the load up to your preference for performance level (accuracy, power, muzzle flash ;-})... ) is worthwhile advice.....

OldDude I had the same thoughts. The Lee load book, and one article I read, states do to the design of the XTP bullet in certain calibers and loads the bullet seats deeper and can up pressures. Bollox posting the actual Hornady loads gave me the opportunity to confirm what you're saying, about start loads, and what I was thinking. I did not think the loads would be that far off JHP loads but better safe then sorry.
Thanks for the comments everyone.

Any 200 grain jacketed bullet data should fine as a starting point, as long as you work up normally.

Personally, I would save the XTPs for full power loads and use less expensive cast or plated bullets for reduced loads.
