2011 Calgary Service Rifle Association match dates

Damn! Can't make it, going on a hunting trip starting on the 5th.
Good shooting everyone!
I'll see everyone again in February I guess.

I'm a new member. I'm planning to show up on Saturday or Sunday to pick up the key. So far no access, so not much fun. Hopefully next year is going to be better.

Ya it's a real drag this BS about range access. As someone who has paid his membership this is unacceptable. There are many in the same situation. I'm hoping that there will be new keys handed out on Sunday at the match but I'm not holding my breath. I've been a member for 6 years now and every year it's like pulling teeth to get access.

Hope to see you out on Sunday. Are you going to bring a rifle or just stop by for a key?

Thanks, I'm so glad to see Your answer here. I feel lost (a bit) and I'm (certainly) confused about the key issue. My previous range was closed (MVMA in Olds), so I signed up for CSRA last Summer. I paid my dues for family membership, got the card in the mail... and I'm asking for the key ever since. I was told via email to come for a match to pick up the key. Now, because of my working schedule it's difficult for me to attend the range on the weekends (at least for now), so I'm a member with no access. Hopefully it's gonna change soon. Any idea what time the match starts? I was planning to come tomorrow, but maybe I can make it on Sunday instead if there is a chance to pick up the keys. I need access to start my training first, so I guess I will just say hello and cross my fingers for You Guys. I just can't see myself attending any matches without being prepared first. Again, thanks for your answer. Good to know that I'm not alone in this...

Nestor,

First off don't worry about training. Just come out and play. It's really casual and the group of guys are nice and helpful. I only get out to 1 or 2 Service Rifle matches a year so I'm not very practiced either. It's a lot of fun regardless or your score.

The best way to get your hands on a key is to attend the match and it gives you a chance to meet some of the regulars who are a good source of info. I was a member of the Fullbore club but gave up on that because they treat the range like it's their private club or something. Very exclusive you know. I switched over to SR because the guys are much easier to talk to. As a member of Fullbore I went a whole year without getting gate access and back then it was just a combo lock. Then had to pay again for the following year and start the process all over again. My experiences have been more positive with the SR club but unfortunately their hands are tied a lot of times as well.

If you're going through the trouble to drive out to the range you might as well bring a rifle. It's just silly not to.

See you tomorrow.

Just a thought. Have you considered joining the Rosebud BR club? No BS there in getting the gate combo. It's like clockwork. At least when I can't shoot on the 900m range I can shoot at Rosebud. Not sure if you've checked it out but there are 14 benches out to 300y and silhouettes out to 500y. Great spot and even a club house you can chill out in providing you pay the extra $5 for the key. PM me if you're interested and I'll explain in further detail.

Great fun to be had out there today. Here are the scores:

When I added all the scores at the match I accidentally included the "mad minute" as a scored match. I have fixed it and here are the updated scores:

Craig: 245. 6V. CZ 858, Surplus ammo.
Dan: 233. 2V. Springfield M1A, Handloads.
Grant: 206. 5V. Norc M14, MFS.
Cam: 190. 2V. Mosin-Nagant, Handloads.
Jay: 188. 4V. Swede M38, Handloads.
Rob : 188. 0V. Norwegian 98, Handloads.
Greg: 136. 1V. SKS, Surplus.

Mad minute scores are:

Craig: 15 Hits
Grant: 10 Hits
Cam: 5 Hits
Dan: 4 hits
Rob : 3 hits
Greg: 3 Hits

As for the key issue they are normally avaliable at matches. Don't worry if you've never shot a match before. No training required, just come out and shoot! Everyone is laid back and scores are for nothing more than bragging rights. There is no better way to practice then to come out and shoot the matches.

Thanks Cam for putting on the Battle Rifle Match I will see you at the January match.
Members do not automatically get keys upon joining Full bore or SR we would like to see you attend at match or two and take the range orientation course (mandatory for all CSRA members before keys are released )

Congratulations to all of You. Well, I actually somehow was able to squizee a bit of time before heading out for work and I came to the range at 9:10.
I saw You guys preparing on the line, but had no time to say hello. I was called for work earlier that day, so I was in hurry.
I was told by one of the gentlemens who did set-up the targets that there were no executive members on site and no keys to be handed out that day.
I really wish I could attend the match, but work has priority over my hobby.
Oh....well. Nice range.

To all those that have hijacked this thread.

OK enough B/S already. This thread is here to discuss our matches and scores for those matches.
If you want to complain about range access, do it in an email, or better yet get you sorry a$s out to the APRA AGM and put you criticism to the APRA board who sets the rules of range access in the first place.
Secondly, don't get upset with fellow members who volunteer for this organization because they are not available to hand you a f@cking key on a silver platter. 6 years for a key? I've been the VP for the CSRA in that whole time and I have no idea who you are. How many matches have you been to in that time? How many emails or phone calls have you made in that time?

Lastly, The CSRA is first and foremost a Service Rifle club that promotes Service Rifle competitions and shooting. If someone is looking to join and not show up for competitions, they are better off with another gun club that will be more suited to their style and availability of shooting.
We are not going to apologize for being a specialized group who focuses on competitive shooting and we are not actively seeking members who have no interest in this type of competition. If you, as a fellow black rifle shooter don't mind this, yet still want access to a top notch facility, the onus is on you to gain membership and access - come out to a meeting or get out for a match day. As Savage indicated, orientation is mandatory.

+1.

To add, we ARE actively looking for, accepting, and encouraging new members who are interested in participating in positional marksmanship skills, drills, and matches, and to help keep a sport alive.

Definitely looking forward to seeing more from this crowd at the January winter match, and matches forward.

Mr 1936 nailed that:
"Don't worry if you've never shot a match before. No training required, just come out and shoot! Everyone is laid back and scores are for nothing more than bragging rights. There is no better way to practice then to come out and shoot the matches."

If you don't know a person then don't take their money for the gate key and give them false hopes. That's what is upsetting. I understand the position of the board though and believe me we would all like to attend matches or the AGM on a more regular basis. We don't miss matches or miss the AGM by choice I assure you. I was fired up because access was changed without notice. Membership was paid for 12 months but I could not shoot and prepare for an Flcass match. I don't think my reaction is completely unjustified. For what it's worth I have no hard feelings and I hope you don't either.

I have personally sent out two emails this year regarding the access change. While I agree it was f'ed up in execution (again APRA driven), it was not without warning. If members don't like the way the APRA is doing things, email the APRA president or run for a board position at the AGM.
If you are an F class shooter your best bet would be to belong to the fullbore group.

Fair enough.

I try to shoot both Service and Fclass. I'm away so much that this allows me to at least have a chance of attending a match when I'm home and to maintain some sort of relationship with the groups to ensure continued access. I initially joined the Fullbore group but it proved nearly impossible to get access even though I would shoot with them on a regular basis. This was the basis of my earlier comments and I'm sorry I voiced my opinion in this thread. I realize my mistake now and why you reacted the way you did. I joined Service Rifle because I like the attitude of the shooters better and how the group is more accommodating. I did send several emails to the APRA voicing my concerns but was basically ignored. The only response was that I should take my concerns up with whatever user group I belonged to.

So a January match eh? Do we have any dates set? What format? I really enjoyed the last battle rifle match. I know a guy who would come down from Prince George with his Garand for the next one.

Sure, nice not knowing You and all the fellow members who volunteer for this organization by taking my money and not providing access to this facility.
