2012 muledeer buck
Being new to archery I've spent all summer relentlessly practessing eagerly waiting opening day.
After trying to tail 3 reasonable muly bucks for the last 2 weeks or so, they kept appearing in the same alfalfa field each day but always way out there and of course there is no cover.
Yesterday they weren't to be seen until 7 30 pm and dusk was way to quick to settle so another itchy trigger finger evening was spent wandering how to get into shooting distance.
4 am soon rolled around and so did dawn and just I was about to drive on there in the distance antlers slowly waddled over the horizon, bingo!
so, the long stalk was on and boy was it long and slow,
After walking out into the crop closing the distance to 350 yards it was down to a crawl, a long 2 hour crawl.
At 100 yards for the longest time I moved forward they moved forward, ntil they settled, only moving when the wind rustled the alfalfa I got to 60ish yards but there was a large flat area in front, not wanting to break the little cover I had what now?
Bugger me they only turned back and gradually stepped closer, the binos were covered with water, I was soaked and shaking with addrenalin.
The range finder was out, one wide but short, one square but thin and a thick square 4x4 thats the one, 59, 58, 57, 56, 55...... and stop for a nap.
A pause gave me time to sort myself out and get to a knee, nock the arrow and wait. His friends alittle further off still stood looking away, he rose and looked right at me, turned his head as i drew the the bow, settled, said a few nice words to the arrow and away it flew all 380gns at 290fps, a g5 t3 tipped easton axis thumped home aiming dead on, I had not allowed enough for the brisk breeze but still caught the rear of both lungs. He deer took a quick step 70 yards following his brothers, haunched up, laid down and I started to breath again.
