2012 Winchester Alaskan .338WM:Finally.

Absolutely beautiful rifle! I am on a huge Model 70 kick of late, but couldn't find anything suitable while I was looking for a .338. Ended up settling for a Ruger blued/wood with iron sights that another member here made me a great deal on. I know I am going to have rifle envy after seeing your piece. I am just glad I have several other M70's in the safe that I can fondle when my .338 envy creeps up!! Good luck on your hunt!

How about an update?

I've been thinking I should get one of those, but wondering how it handles? Not so worried about shooting tiny groups, but general smoothness and reliability of the action.
I had a Ruger M77 MK II briefly. Someone had installed a muzzle brake, which I would have gotten rid of if I'd decided to keep it, but the biggest issue I had with it is that the bolt would bind terribly in rapid fire drills. Run it slow, no problems, try to run it hard and fast, and I just couldn't do it. Spent hours trying to polish the feed rails, would start thinking I"m making progress until I compared it to my Mausers.

Now I'm a little shy about buying new guns without being able to test them first, and I doubt any gunshop will appreciate me dry firing and slamming the bolt on their new rifles.

How far apart are the back base screw holes on your .338? I bought some Leupold standard reversible front and rear bases for my .375 and the rear holes are only half the distance apart than my front ones. Is this the norm? Do I only use one screw hole for the rear or Does Leupold make a special base for this action?

Correct bases should be available from Leupold. I bought a set of Talley screw-lock bases and low rings for my pre-64 (1954) .300H+H that has the closer holes on bridge. Got them from Prophet River. Great setup and you can position bases to allow rings closer or farther apart. I mounted mine so rings are closer and fits Leupold 2.5-8X36 exactly. The low rings clear bolt-handle nicely also.

I have a nice old VXII 3-9x - 40mm. It is going on it for now. I may end up putting on a VX3 1.5-5x on it in the future if I don't like the other. Definitely good enough for the moose that I will be hunting with it.

Great looking rifle and I'm happy to see the pre-64 barrel contour back again. All it's missing is a Red recoil pad but that's an easy fix.
Put it in a super grade stock and it's 100% winner.

The Browning/Winchester product support dude told me that the Alaskan will be offered in .375 H&H again next year as a regular caliber and not just a one year shot show gun.

I'm surprised that it comes in a nicely polished blue except the bolt handle remains oddly matte finish, will have to fix that.
