Rgv this was your first service rifle match. Perhaps you could write a little bit on here for those that are worried about coming out as a first service rifle match. Did you experience any bad attitudes or intimidation etc? I think that folks might be a little freaked about making a provincial championship their first match.
Awesome shooting by the way dude!
There certainly wasn't any sort of negative attitude from any corner, complete opposite.
I think the main 'intimidation' keeping prospective participants away comes from three things,
Firstly is the lack of 300m and 500m zeros. The Friday walk-backs aren't easily accessible to guys with regular working hours. The easy solution is to just give new shooters unlimited sighters on the deliberates, especially if you squad them behind an experienced shooter who only needs 5-6 minutes to shoot and can give a hand after. Being given two sighters and then going for score at half a kilometer distance when you've only had access to a 100 yard range is going to be intimidating no matter what.
Really though, just showing up with a good 100y zero, good ammo, and a good basic optic that isn't calibrated in fathoms or marked in Cyrillic, you'll get enough help on the mound to keep you going at all ranges.
second is the perception of complex courses of fire. Again, for someone who has never shot organized events and has mostly shot at enclosed ranges, the CoF can appear to be a little complex when you first read through them. Clinics like you've started will open this up a lot, as will squadding the new shooters on relays #2 and #4 so they can watch a relay first.
Lastly, like you said, jumping into a 'Provincial Championship' as a newbie can be intimidating. Adding at least one more match in April, the clinics, etc are things that will make it easier to jump into SR.
Having said all that, I really enjoyed SR and I don't know why I didn't start a long time ago. For me the appeal is the broad challenges, going from 500m deliberate and rapid fire all the way down to 25m snap shooting.
