2013 M14 Hunting thread

Indeed, schoolyard BS.

My M14s and M1 get used for wolfing, nothing beats the sights for random range fast moving targets. Try finding a running wolf at 200 yards in a scope in scrub brush, and semi is the best tool going for the job. I'll have the Kriegered Garand out this season for some loooong wolf shots, been warming up with it all summer on our 1,000 yard range. The skull below came from that M14'd wolf.

They're bigger than most would think.

oh ya... one more good reason to enlarge the rear peep sight on your M14 is low light in the morning and evening. I found myself heading back early each evening once I could no longer see anything through the small aperture of the rear sight. It was still plenty light to see an animal but certainly too dark to see anything through the sights.

You gotta test your sights in the big woods where it gets much darker earlier than open fields.

Nice catch and pics Ardent! I've yet to catch myself a wolf darn it! HAHA. Post your hunting pics folks and experience! I'm hoping to do some hunting this fall real soon once work slows down and after my holiday to Cuba! I LOVE MY M14 for hunting! ;) GOODLUCK to all of you who's season's are opening!

p.s. TV-presspass thank you for the comment! :D

I've been fortunate to hunt a lot of things on several continents, literally on both sides of the world. Wolves are actually amongst the hardest things to hunt I've ever gone after if you are setting out just to straight hunt Wolves. They cover so much damn ground so quickly, and are so darn smart that it is extremely difficult, and all of their senses are better than yours; hearing, sight, smell. Then again, you can come across them by happenstance when after other things, they screw up here and there, you're usually never ready of course! To date I don't know many people who have set out after wolves and actually got one, in fact I don't know a lot of people who've got them period, but usually it was while hunting something else.

Something about hunting something very cunning is interesting.

I had a wolf point blank comin out of a woodpile, maybe 10 yards and ran straight away from us thru the cut. 2 of us with accurate rifles , .338 WM and 7mmRM , after we both emtied our rifles in attempts to knock him down..... Unscathed that wolf was.
Bullet dodger..matrix kinda szchit LOL
Ever since then I've been more than intrigued.
Do they respond to calls like the coyotes? This winter we'll see :D

I've managed to get their attention calling, just long enough to stop them for a shot, when I've already seen them and they're 300+ yards type stuff, but have never had one come in. I wear a small rabbit distress call around my neck when after them for that, one was even running away and turned around to look briefly when I squealed the call (I was already aiming, call in my teeth), just long enough to make the shot. I find the best place to look for them is rivers in winter, where you find tracks already, they use them as travel corridors and cruise them as it gives a line of sight through to bush for them to spot crossing prey or tracks and scent thereof.

I went out with my Ruger compact every time I dumped the Rokon I was scared of damaging my rifle tomorrow the M14 is going much better rifle for the really ugly stuff

Ruger compact is still cheap, and it's tougher than an M14 by good measure (and many of them are stainless), I wouldn't sweat a thing! If you just plain like the M14 all the more power to ya, many of us do.

My compact is grate for packing or in the truck it way more handy then the M14
But the my M14 is my aboused hunting rifle the one I like to kick the crap out off haahaa
Me and 45acpking are going moose hunting and I'm bringing the both the M14 and my Ruger Toms bringing his M14 and a old303 British

I had to do the same this year, funny enough in the same area :) That makes 2 years in a row  It turns out I worked the whole summer in Merritt, BC (I live in Van area) living in my RV. Well at least I've got a week planned over Thanksgiving near Kelowna for my white/mulie. My new Savage 10PC will be first up at bat so sadly the M1A will be the back up in case the 10PC craps out.
