2013 Spring Turkey!!!

Season opens next weekend here. Hoping with work I'll be able to get out and get a bird of my own. Thinking I may have to take a morning off work.Congrats on the successes fellas and good luck to those who still have tags to fill.

i was out but it is my first year and not sure what im doing. I researched but opening day brought nothing for me. tried my other hunting spot and spooked 1 on my way in but couldnt get him to come back. gotta find someone experienced to teach me some stuff. i have a month yet so we will see how it goes. i would love just to hear one, that would be an awesome start.

Keep at it, there is still lots of time left. Try to go into your spot early, I hear them gobbling by 5am. Also avoid making noise or movement since they have good ears and eyes. Go out multiple times throughout the day, early morning, lunchtime, and evening. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the hunt!

Went out this morning and tons of gobbling going on but no opportunities presented themselves for a shot... Will definitely be going out again this weekend! It is kind of hard to get out while being in the middle of exams but it is oh so worth it!

ya i talked to a veteran hunter at the gun shop and it sounds like i busted my hunt by not getting out early enough, and by walking to close to their roost.

Try to go out tonight and roost a bird, this is the easiest way of minimizing the mouvements and noise, you just go back in very early when it is full dark, knowing were you are going take your time , and be very silent, get to about 100 yards if you can, if you are scare of being heard just set up further, find a comfy place and just wait for the noise to start, dont call just scrape your hand in dry leaves very gently ant wait... they will gooble to that noise, dont call except for one small cluck or a little purr and wait , often that is enough to make fly down in your direction and they all ready have pinpoint you, a lot of calling is seldom good... Good luck to you and everyones....
For myself season is over , did fill my second tag this morning with a bird i roosted yesterday, he flyed down toward me and i just scratched the leave, to a shot @ 15 yards, a nice mature tom weighing in at 21.5 pounds, this bird is the 43th one of my spring turkey hunting career started in 1991 in Mooers NY state ... JP.

Well came up empty handed this morning. Lots of gobbles around 0515. Got situated in our spot and heard them fly down around 0550 or 0600.

One tom came streaking out of the bush and beelined across the field but was too far to shoot. A few minutes later 2 more toms took the same path and again, too far to take a poke at.

After another hour we moved into the bush a bit and I had a questionable opportunity at a jake, but passed. Lots of trees and I couldn't really tell how far away he was. Oh well.

It was my brother's first hunt so I'm glad we heard lots and saw a few. Tomorrow, I know exactly where to set up and hopefully we can bag a double.

I did found out that once you move after having no luck on the first morning set up, your chance of getting that boss gobbler are really down, but if you are after a jake, inexperience make them kind of stupidely run to any call they ear, your are lucky to get a second chance at the boss gobbler in the same day, even in the same week, they have now recorded your sound and that why they went tru 2, 3 or 4 spring seasons, in 2000 in New York state, i missed out bad on a big boss so the morning after the only thing i offered him was double gobble and fighting purr, i got it good, 26.5 pounds, would i have used the day before purr, it would have run out of the county.... Turkey hunting is my favorite hunt of all... JP.

I down. 1 to go

Went out for my first Turkey hunt.

Thursday morning heard a bit first thing, saw nothing. Saw a few in the area when driving around.

This morning got to a spot by 5:30, around 10:30am heard a gobble and noticed about 5 toms/jakes making their way towards a hen decoy I had about 20' in front of me. I very quietly slid into a prone position at the natural blind I was behind, waiting until a tom was just in the right spot and got him. I shot a little bit low as I wasn't used to shooting so close, but luckily none of the breast meat was ruined.

Only around 16 to 18 pounds, maybe 1/4" spurs... but was the only one that I could take without hitting any of the others and not bad for my first turkey. This was in WMU 85b.

Got out this morning for my first ever turkey hunt and jeez I'm hooked! Got pretty lucky and bagged this Tom an hour after I got setup! Didn't weigh him but he was a good size, 9" beard and just over 3/4" spurs in WMU90. I expect it will be a while before I'm this lucky again!
