Hi Everyone!

The last couple of weeks I've been keeping tabs on the Ammo shortages in the US through a couple of forums and Google News.

By all accounts Walmart has limited customers to three boxes of ammo each day, and most retail stores have been cleaned out or running low on .22LR, .223, .308 and often are short on 9mm, .40 cal and even .45ACP. Regular trap loads or light field loads in shotguns are usually available, but slugs and buckshot less so. And while there's more availability of non-military calibres like 30/30, .270 and 30.06 (no longer a military round), even many of those options seem to be drying up as Americans unable to get ammo in the more popular calibres look to alternatives to keep shooting until the shortage abides. Most online dealers are out of stock of a bulk of their selection and no longer taking back orders, while many gun owners line up at stores before opening in the hopes that a new shipment of ammo will provide what they are looking for. It looks as if it could be several months before supply and production will catch up with demand.

My own observations while buying and conversations with Canadian gun dealers (including three site sponsors) seem to indicate that they still have decent stock at regular prices but aren't sure when they'll get further ammo from the states once they've sold their current stock. While we are lucky to get ammo from places like China that are unaffected by US purchasing, Canadians seem to have been buying that at a faster rate than normal to compensate for expected shortages of US ammo, so it's unclear how long that could make up for the lack of supply from the south.

This shortage of ammo is also associated with a shortage of popular guns (i.e ARs, but also less controversial guns like the Ruger 10/22) and reloading components., though that's the topic of other areas of the forum.

Has anyone noticed any trends in terms of ammo selection at their local dealers or changed their ammo purchasing patterns to prepare for any potential shortage. I'd been pretty well stocked for most of my shooting needs but have recently brought a couple bulk packs of regularly priced .22LR, plus other ammo like crates of .223 and .308, for which I hadn't huge supplies, as well as a couple of Glock, 10/22 and extra LAR mags so that I've got enough of the same sized mags for CQB matches. I also picked up some dies, powder and primers to finally reload the 1000 9mm bullets someone gave me a year ago. Luckily the supply here has allowed enough time to ponder any purchases without having to rush or risk spending more than would be prudent, but certainly intend to keep to a higher minimum reserve level to compensate for any future shortages caused by politics to the south of us. I wonder if anyone else has noticed any shortages or have any concerns about future supply?

what you say is true. the lgs's are having a hard time sourcing any ammo and buy whatever they can when they find it. The Major suppliers are virtually out of the staple calibers. Its going to get real bad in May. stock up while you can. The surplus ammo is starting to dry up too as its running out as the supply is not endless. Canadian stores are now getting calls from the South customers wanting to buy all they can

Yes, I've heard of at least one gunshop that's been approached by New York dealers hoping to buy up some of their guns and ammo.

I'm in pretty good shape, but I'll continue to pick up bulk packs of .22LR, maybe one or two more sets of dies for calibres I haven't reloaded yet, and if I can another crate of 7.62x39. I've picked up a couple of mags that are no longer in stock at the dealers I brought them from and might just purchase a few "targets of opportunity" if they cross my path.

It probably wouldn't be a bad time for the hunter who shoots a couple boxes of a favourite rifle calibre each season (i.e. .270 or .300 Win Mag) to pick those up now while they know that they're still available.

How long do you fellows think this is going to last for this time. Do you remember 4 years ago when Obama was first elected and how there was major shortages of things for about 6 months? How is this any different? FS

Even reloading supply is running short. Was at Italian Sporting goods, one of the larger gun stores in Vancouver, for a pack of LR magnum primer. Only had Fed Match, all the regular mag LR were sold out.

I was in to a Waterloo store last week to pick up some mini mags. They didn't have any and an employee told me they'd heard from CCI and Federal not to expect .22 LR shipped until 2014.

My supply is quite big but if i see a case of a 1000 rounds of a caliber i shoot i will buy it, yesterday did pick up half a case ( 25 boxes ) of Barnes 168 gr TSX in 30-06 and half a case ( 25 boxes ) of 300WSM in 180 gr in TSX and i got lucky with 2 X 500 CCI Stinger and a brick of 500 rounds of CCI Maxi Mag 22 mag... JP.

I bought an extra few cases of ammo in the calibres I use since xmas. Got it all at prices equal to or cheaper than I would have paid before the current panic buying.

Peoples are still not sure how it will affect them, i'd bet a lot will be more nervous when they are down to their last 20 rounds ...and NOBODY have anything in stock... JP.

I just posted this in another thread yesterday too. Looks like the price of 22 ammo is going up. Price of Blaser 22 40gr round nose at Italian Sporting goods was $180/5000 a couple of weeks ago, and now is $270/5000. CanadaAmmo is listing their cases of 5000 at $299 as well. Reliable still had some cases of Federal 36gr HP at $195/5250 - so I picked up a couple to stock up.

Well i was just in States for unrelated reasons and decided to pop in for a quick look at a few stores. Anything AR15 related is gone, 223, forget it.

Closer to home SAIL has very little 22LR, Lebarons havent had the win or rem thunderbolts for about 2 months now, just the more expensive stuff, havent looked into 223 from them. Both lebaron locations in Toronto have advised me that they wont get any more Milsurp 7.62 until March IF they get it. CCI small rifle primers havent had in stock for a while either...

One thing i would def like to stock up on is .224" 55gr bulk projectiles. Down to about 1K of that.

i expect this to last for years. The dems are serious about controlling ammo sales, its not a joke. Many people who have NEVER bought before are now buying the market has increased almost 4 times to what it used to be, yes, its grown that much. Obama is in for 4 more years, you can expect this one to last a while

as long as i can get .22lr primers and powder i'll be goodbeing broke with all this going on sucks BTW i have not bought a box yet in all this i have maybe 2 crates of x39 and 2 of 54r surplus around 500 12ga slugs and no .209 primers well i guess i'll start doing what i did back in 09 paper cap's here i come
