After 6 years of bad luck and noobishness, I finally got my whitetail. I was working afternoon shift last week, giving me several opportunities through the week to get out. This was a nice change from the last few years where I was on straight day shift throughout the entire season. Finally being blessed with an antler-less tag, I figured I would be picky for the 1st week and try and wait for a decent buck for a 1st harvest. Saturday morning after not seeing any bucks on the property all week, I had the chance and took this nice little doe. She wasn't a trophy by a long shot, but she was my first and that made me happy. She was taken broadside from my tree stand at 30 yards with a CVA muzzle loader and a 250gr Barnes spitfire. Buck fever placed the to the left, losing a roast but stopping her fast. she laid down less than 20 yards from where she was hit.

Sunday morning our party moved to another location and it didn't take long for action to start. Just before 1st legal light I watched a nice doe walk out into the freshly cut field. A few second later an 8pt buck followed her out and proceeded to have his way with her 325yards out from me lol. Then another doe appeared, then a 3rd doe in the tree line. I sat and watched for 25 minutes, taking phone pics through my binos and scope waiting and hoping the distance would close in to shooting range. Shots rang out from the next field and all the deer bounded away into the trees. About 20 minutes later a young doe reappeared and started making her way towards me, within seconds the horny old boy was right behind her trotting down the field in hot pursuit. she stopped at 80 yards and he paused at 118 yards, that's when I squeezed the trigger, he dropped right there on the spot. Not a trophy either, but still damn exciting :)

Wow congrats!! This is encouraging as this season is my second... and frustration does hit ya. Im taking next week off (or most of it) to try and up my chances!! Thanks for the boost, and help realizing that patience is the key!!

"he's not a trophy either"
if they are in your eyes then that's what they are, trophy's. don't ever let anyone tell you different. a trophy animal is different in everyone's eyes. I have people pissed at me every year because I let bucks walk that they say they would have shot.......... I'm the one pulling the trigger, my choice. am I wrong or are they wrong??? I haven't shot a buck in 4 years but have shot several does but again my choice when I'm pulling the trigger there choice when they have there finger on the trigger.
don't let anyone tell you they aren't trophy's if they are to you.
congrats

I remember when a doe meant more than a big buck does now. I can't say that I'm happier now, and judging by your grin you're doing OK. Besides, this way you have something to strive for. If you start out with the biggest buck of your life its all downhill.

How true!! My first deer was a nice, dry doe, and as a young teen, I walked around with a smile on my face for weeks.

You couldn't have removed that smile with a spade, lol.

Since then I have shot many, many deer [plus numerous other animals], but nothing quite compares to that first success!

Regards, Dave.

A few pics turned out ok, it's tough to keep it all aligned long enough for the auto focus to do it's thing. here are 2 pics, one through the binos at 300ish yards(zoomed in a little) and one through the scope at 225 yards (no zoom).

I'll get the others loaded today. I also had a small HD video camera rolling on the side of the ML too, but recoil quickly redirected my cinema-photography efforts elsewhere lol.
