We're back again, for our third annual Vintage Battle Rifle Shoot at the Homestead Shooting Facility west of Calgary.

Details to follow, but this year's event will take place Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19. Course of fire will be very similar to previous years' events, but with a couple of twists this year to make it interesting.

2015 Calgary Vintage Battle Rifle Event Details

OThis year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, with V-E Day on May 8, 1945 and V-J day on September 2 of that year.

100 years ago Canadian troops were still embroiled in the Great War, and on April 22, 2015, on the front lines near Ypres, they found themselves facing a horrific new weapon of war, as poison gas was used for the first time in that conflict.

To acknowledge and honour these significant contributions to our history, we’re holding our third annual vintage battle rifle shoot

This year’s event will once again take place on the Alberta Fullbore Rifle Association (AFRA) 900-metre range at the Alberta Provincial Rifle Association (APRA) Homestead shooting facility west of Calgary and will follow closely the set-up from previous years’ events.

Prizes will be awarded but a big focus of this event is to just hang out, have some fun, talk about our rifles, and maybe let others try out a vintage battle rifle they’ve not experienced before.

This two-day event will take place July 18 and 19.

Space is limited, so pre-registration is recommended.

Outline of event:

Saturday, July 18 – Sighting In
  • Range opens at 8:00 a.m. for registration. Registration closes at 9 a.m.
  • 9:00 a.m.: welcome, program outline and orientation – including target marking as all shooters will need to take a turn at the butts
  • 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.: sighting-in @ 100 metres. 10 rounds. Deliberate fire, prone. Range will be available for shooters to sight in their rifles at 100 metres. Targets will be marked for shooters
  • 1 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.: lunch and continued battle rifle conversation/show and shine
  • 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.: 200-metre fun shoot. 10 rounds. Deliberate fire, prone
  • 3:30 p.m. – 4 p.m.: clean-up

NOTE: Time and capacity willing, participants can bring and sight-in a second rifle on Saturday. Participants will have to select the one rifle they will shoot on the Sunday.
All shooting is under the control of an RSO.

Sunday, July 19 – Shoot For Score
  • Range opens at 8:00 a.m. for registration. Registration closes at 9 a.m.
  • 9:00 a.m.: welcome – day plan
  • 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.: 100-metre shoot.
  • 10:30 a.m. – noon – 200-metre shoot
  • Noon – 1:00 p.m.: Lunch
  • 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.: 300/400-metre shoot (dependent on range condition)
  • 3 p.m. – 4 p.m.: clean-up, scoring, prizes and bull session

  • Shooter has two minutes to fire 10 rounds. Target will be scored only at completion of 10 rounds

That won't be far from home for me and I'd love to check it out. I'll see if I can brush up on my Lee Enfield shooting (and round up enough ammo!)

I certainly had fun last year and plan on being there again, and I have two buddies who might make it this year. I'll probably shoot the M39 again on Sunday but have to decide between the SVT and my recently-acquired M91/30 on Saturday. Might there be any chance of firing at 300m and/or 400m on Saturday to work out a zero & sight picture?

Regards,
Joel

It was fun last year and I'm looking forward to it again this year. It's a really nice range, and a good time ogling everyone's classic gear, no matter how bad I end up shooting.

John and I will definitly be there. It's a great road trip from Vancouver and we had a blast last year. We will both be shooting pre 45 iron sights but I am having trouble choosing what to shoot. So many good milsurps.

2015 Event - poster revealed

As part of the BTT bump, here's what this year's poster is going to look like. All participants get one to take home.

I framed mine from last year and it hangs nicely on the wall with my rifles. I'll just have to make room for this years. See you all in a few weeks.

Still some slots left. A great event for you to try out your vintage milsurp battle rifles on scored targets at some distance. Check post #2 for details on registration.

Just got an M1 Garand won't have enough ammo reloaded for this aiming for next year tho! look forward to the pictures

Just buy a couple boxes of commercial white box and give-er. It'll be nice to see a Garand represent.

I'm down to my "back up of my back up" for what I'll be taking, because my first and second choices are in parts in the garage getting re-worked. I was hoping to beat my score from last year, but as it stands, I'll be happy to hit paper and ogle over all the cool vintage stuff that shows up.

I'll try to get it loaded if people are going to try to hit paper/have fun. It will probably be my second time out with it and first time will only be at 100yards at the public range. So open sights at 200-300m will be interesting. Little worried but meh might as well come out and have some fun. I'll see if I can get my progressive working on 30-06 this weekend and sign up for this event. First Milsurp I will attend, the wife won't be happy if I need to buy more when I get home haha. The Garand was my banked time/vacation time payout present haha

It's a fun shoot. Everyone is trying to shoot the best they can, but the only thing really on the line is a bit of ego.

Last year there were a few people there with rifles they had just wiped the storage grease off and were shooting for the first time.
