The last alberta whitetail tag I filled was in 2010 on a big buck. I've since been very picky on what I was looking for and passed on a lot of nice bucks in the process. This year I had two giants on camera and I set out in hopes of taking one of these big bush whitetails. I spent over 20 days between my wife and I sitting on cutlines hoping one of these big boys would screw up. On the 20th Nov while walking into my stand I could tell there was a hot doe because of all the zigzaging across the line. At about 845am a doe came out of the willows and grazed around. I was in the middle of texting my buddy to see how he was making out when I looked up to the big 5x6 crossing the line behind the doe. I grabbed my model 70 35 whelen and put the cross hairs on him just as he entered the bush. Damn! I screwed up! I waited another 2 or 3 minutes when a small 4x4 came out and started chasing the doe back Into the willows. I got ready hoping the big guy would step out. About 10 min later I seen the doe running across the line and on her heels was a solid 4x4. I only had a few seconds to make up my mind and get a shot off. I fired just as his head was going into the bush on the opposite side. I waited ten minutes and walked to where he was standing and found good blood and 30 yards away my buck was piled up into the edge of a ravine. My shot was good and took out his heart and lungs. Pretty happy with him all things considered. Hopefully my big bucks make the rest of deer season and I can chase them again next year in the depths of the forest.
