2016 Canadian IPSC Nationals

Yes, seemed to fill the first day registration opened.

I know that this is unfortunate for the people who didn't get into the match, but this is really good news for the state of IPSC in Canada. I remember last year, when the Nationals at Sharon filled up really quickly, it sparked some discussion locally about registrations for nationals and whether some kind of a weighted slot system might be necessary for future nationals. At the time, it was suggested that registration filling up was only a problem because the Nationals was being held in Ontario.

Perhaps it's time to rethink on that and open up discussion about Nationals slots and registrations?

yup

Totaly agree also. I want to talk with my section coordinator about that to be discuss at the next ipsc canada assembly this summer. Maybe those who are agree with that can forward this suggestion to their SC.

Maybe more days so more people can shoot? If it fills in a day or two, perhaps lengthining the Nationals could work?
Or im completely wrong, I know a tonne of work is done in the background and not sure if something like that is possible.

One of the idea's i had was to have teams shoot all on the same day, 1 full day. This would require another day added to the overall match. So to make the match fair to every shooter who would be slotted for two 1/2 days, reduce stage count to something that can be done in a full day. Any other Level 3 held in ON is being done in one day.
My thoughts on this idea come from the fact that the teams are given almost half the slots now.

I know there is a lot of work to put this match on but I think the match should start Monday morning giving to extra days and more shooters to compete in the nationals

I would like to see Nationals be a week long event, with awards and banquet on the day after the match. ex Mon Pre-match, Tue-Fri main match, Sat Shoot offs, awards and banquet. Those of us who travel extreme distances for these matches are already spending extra time there touring, so why not, maybe, double the amount of shooters and still have the required 2 days shooting and 1 working. Give extra time for touring either before shooting or after. I understand the logistical challenges, but this is a fast growing sport. The more we can accommodate newer shooters into large events like Nationals, the longer we can expect them to stick around in the sport and promote it Locally and Nationally. Please someone bring this up at the AGM. Unfortunately work happens and I had to withdraw my registration.

I think we are fortunate JS stepped up to host the match. It is a volunteer position!

It's already a week long even for the MD, QM, CROs, RM, stats team... it's not so simple to just make the match longer. Many volunteers are already largely are taking a week or more of vacation off of work to put the match on. The match doesn't just put on itself.

The easiest solution would to be give teams first slots then award remaining slots to the provinces to hand out, similar to how Worlds are handled. Determine how many slots the match can hold at a given venue and then distribute them.
Remember, this is our National Championship. It is run in the same basic format every year. Primarily you have to shoot over two half days. That's part of the contest, to see who can come out and perform their best in that situation. It's a bit different from having a good or a bad day. You have to be prepared to shoot your best on multiple days. Personally I'd like to see it shot over three or four half days. In Ontario we are too used to one day matches where you shoot and leave. It's a different game when you go somewhere else and have to shoot multiple days like a European match, US Nationals, area matches or Worlds.
As for having a longer match, it would be nice but as mekanik pointed out, not so simple. Staff already has to be there for a full week as it sits now, which is one week off work for these people too, to run longer you are looking at the whole staff having to take almost another full week off work and since the match covers those officials rooms etc that's gonna be a hefty bump in the match fee too. These people already give up a week of their work and vacation to put in this match for the shooters, asking to give up another full week is a lot to ask.
Add to that most ranges are hard pressed to be closed to their members for a week, let alone two weeks. Last year the schedule was, set up sun, mon, preshoot Tuesday, match proper wed-sat, tear down sun, turn range back over to club Monday. That's all the time you have and even at that it's tight with the set up.
The reality is this format works really good. As HB said, it's a good sign for IPSC in Canada that that many people want to shoot Nationals, but not everybody can. We have to figure out how to make the best of what we have so it's fair for all the provinces.

I know the guys in NS are working very hard at making this an excellent match. Please send them your thanks for taking this on!

Make it a 24 hour a day match?
Shoot half the stages in daylight and half at night with pistol mounted lights and lasers!!

Match capacity becomes x2
Match awesomeness x1,000,000

safety nazis at CFO office would wet themselves of the opportunity to shut down IPSC... lol i wish we could do that though.. id bring my 44 revolver with h110 and 180gr HPs... i dont need a flashlight LOL

Hard to compare to A2. They have 15 stages on 15 bays. Not many clubs in Canada can manage that...if any. So you can't be shooting 15 stages simultaneously

one other solution is to have 2 clubs within a 60km radius co-ordinate a 4 day nationals (2 days at each club) with the match hotel being midway between....less than a half hour drive to either club.....even if there were only 3 or 4 locations this would be possible across Canada it would allow 100 or more shooters to attend Nationals, even more with dedicated officials at each club (as it is now half the match is already slotted to team members)

Whaaaaaat?? I can't see where loosing the workday allows 50% more shooters. The workday just ads workers to help the squads get 9 stages done in half a day. You would have to add 1.5 days to the three day match to get 50% more shooters as I see it. Not having a workday just means the squads have to patch and reset.

Or am I missing your point??
