2016 ORA outlook

Provincial Rifle Association

Emphasis on Provincial.
Having matches at other locations may mean more driving for the Toronto crowd, but it also will create the opportunity to bring in shooters from other parts of the province. I for one would be more likely renew my lapsed membership to attend PR matches if they were held at Barriefield (Kingston) or Connaught (Ottawa).

BTW, how does having ORA matches at Connaught work in relation to the NCRRA/NDHQRA? is there some sort of reciprocity agreement that the memberships are recognised at each others matches?

NCRRA is a club that is located at Connaught, they do not own the range. ORA matches held at Connaught would be no different than an ORA match held at Kingston, Winona or Cedar Springs.

Kombayotch this may be a crazy suggestion. But I am a rookie at this you know that. But at one event I attended two years ago we had to share the range with f class crowd. And that day alone proved to me the f class crowd is who runs the ORA. And looking at the schedule etc the writing was on the wall. The f class crew seems to be so old they all had wagons, umbrellas, I think I even saw a couple catheters and respirators. The pr group is a lot of younger shooters. So why wouldn't the ORA focus more on the up and coming shooters and future of their membership. Let's be honest f class is losing steam. As a matter of fact I think I met 4-5 shooter at pr who joined pr after quitting fclass. Anyways... Back to my crazy idea.

Since it's totally legal to shoot on crown land. Would it be difficult to have a group of guys organize a shoot on crown land? I remember you posting some of the American events videos. Couldn't that be organized on crown land? I imagine as long as their is not intent to profit then there is no legal issues? Every shooter just lays a entrance fee to cover the costs of materials etc? Is this crazy?

I don't think you're thinking of F-Class. Most guys in F-Class are between 30-60, and a lot of them (myself included) also shoot PR.

There are people at NCRRA who would be happy to help run an ORA PR match (they just don't want to organize it), we just need someone from ORA to take leadership on it.

It's not the F-Class guys, many of them are fed up as well.

As far as crown land goes; you cannot "discharge, on a regular and structured basis, firearms for the purpose of target practice or target shooting competitions" unless the place in question is an approved shooting range under s. 29 of the Firearms Act. That means that while you can go out on crown land and screw around, you can be charged with operating an illegal shooting range if you try to do any kind of organized shooting event on it.

There was a day in 2014 where the schedule got messed up and PR and F both showed up at Mons. I was there. We tried to run PR on the left and F on the right, but it didn't work. Different priorities.

I was there that day, it was a gong show to say the least. Believe me when I say the ORA heard about it loud and clear. I was not too happy driving a little over 4 hours each way to fire 36 shots. While the idea of maximizing range time was the goal by shooting an open practice on one side of the range, and a match on the other. The coordination between both groups was lacking.

ORA is the best unkept secret in the shooting community. It has varied disciplines and have huge potentials. It needs to continue to listen and adapt to the changing member demographics. Repairs to the ranges certainly did not help this year.

Have you tried CQB?

Were out 9 times a year and shoot pistol and rifle.

Loads of fun!

Here's the Post

Is anyone looking at the this new development. Borden might be off limits to the ORA for 2016

Canada’s Department of National Defence said troops at both CFB Borden and CFB Meaford have been preparing to accommodate refugees by winterizing both bases, as well as preparing beds and kitchen space.

I can't see any reason why refugees being quartered at Borden would affect range availability.

I think the federal government should just hire them all.........to do sit-ups on the mechanical target range.

Yes, please go ahead an try to deal with the DND for their ranges, not being part of a provincial or national body. I am not saying that it can't be done, but be prepared to do at least a year of ground work before firing your first shot. Be prepared to have a few million in liability insurance. Spend a few grand on having targets made, be able to place and retrieve them and store them between matches. Build all your shooting structures, place, retrieve and store them between matches. Then someone sitting at a desk at NDHQ who hasn't seen a real range in 5 years is going to do a risk assessment. Let me know how that works out for you.

I would suggest forgetting about DND range altogether. Maybe look at private range facilities more oriented towards operational shooters.

If anyone can get the Meaford Base on the schedule, I am more than willing to help with it. If we need permanent target storage area, I have 5,000 sq/f of dry storage area available 10 min from the base gates. I have multiple trailers available to shuttle items also.

As an aside, what ranges does Meaford have to offer?

- A 600m KD range.
- An urban assault range (contains barriers and facades) that provide various shooting positions.
- Three field ranges that can support up to approx. 1500m on average and with careful placing of targetry could go out to almost 2000m.
- In the near future they will have a range capable of supporting out to 1000m that will be positioned next to the urban assault and can make use of the barricades and facades.
- An 800m mechanical mover
- Various steel targetry.
- Possibility of barracks and a mess hall (but those will probably be occupied by refugees)
