2016 predator hunting

made it out this afternoon to an area that typically holds some wolves. 3 stands, no action but got to see some nice country

Made four stands with a buddy this morning. Last year we went out once, his first ever predator hunt. Called in a double and he missed one broadside at 75 yards. Redemption came this morning when on the 3rd set we called in a triple to rabbit distress. They were about 25 yards from the foxpro when they got nervous and scattered. One popped back out and I took a shot with my 17 Hornet, just flat out muffed the shot and missed. Coyotes were scattering all over, 4 in total now. One was to our right in the brush, barking and carrying on. I switched to coyote fight on the foxpro and that brought the coyote back to the fenceline 100 yards from us. One shot with the 300WSM did the trick, his first coyote! Another coyote was barking and howling to our left in the timber. More coyote fight on the foxpro and it popped out. I lined up with the Hornet and hit it, seen it go down and flop around, and then it disappeared. All we could find was a few pieces of fur, no blood. Looked for quite a while. Not 100% sold on the 17 Hornet so far. Using 20gr Vmax @ 3500 f/s

Nice shot with a sweet looking rifle, DMS1! Caliber?

Great to see you back at them, Mr. Bartell!

Here's my last one. Pretty special because I had my 6 year old son with me. We tried a few stands together over Christmas with no luck and I dubbed him Mr. Squirmy, Man of a Thousand Questions. LOL. Went last again Friday after school and he was great - still and quiet. Had a pair come out on the tree line about 200 yards. I switched sounds on the FoxPro and gave them a minute to see what would happen. They wouldn't move any closer and kept looking up the field, then back at the decoy, then they both sat down. The Boy whispered to me "Dad - I'm so excited I'm shaking!". I didn't see any sign of what they were looking at (was thinking a 3rd dog maneuvering down wind) and decided to just go ahead and cash in on an easy one with the Tikka .22-250 so The Boy and I could enjoy our success together. My son is really hooked now.

Addiction is an understatement I started hunting coyotes over 35 years ago with 130gr Sierra HP's in my 30-06.

I now have 4 different rifles their only purpose is specifically for predator hunting = 204 Ruger, 223, 22-250 & 6mm-284.

I also have 4 rifles in 25-06 & 6.8SPC that I also use but these are dual use so I load predator rounds 90gr Blitzking @ 3350fps in the 25-06 and 110gr V-Max @ 2750fps in the 6.8spc's when I grab them for predator hunting.

headed out this morning and made a few stands

On our hike into the 3rd stand, 10am, we spot a coyote ahead @ 525 yards. We decide to let him carry on and hope to call him in once we get a bit closer. After 20 mins of rabbit distress, I switched to Coyote duet. That fired up some coyotes a few hundred yards to our SE. Threw in some pup distress and female in heat whimpers. 40 mins in, was playing a mixture of Coyote distress with a Primos raven/crow territorial fight, when my partner whispered that he seen one. I ramped the volume down and he began to lip squeek. I spot the coyote as it makes a few leaps towards the call/decoy. 80 yards broadside and the Fierce 300WSM claims another song dog. Partner spots another and reloads, fires but missed. A young female

Congrates on another one.

I've been out on my snowmobile a few times now just got home actually.

I've done several sets each day out not a sign of anything.

I've never had such bad luck calling I'm starting to think that they hang out closer to the valley bottoms.
