The M249S is a close bolt semi auto version of the M249. If you like to collect belt feds, you probably will want one badly. Not a practical firearm, but it is a very cool piece to have in the men cave to impress buddies!!! It is very awesome that FN actually bothers to expend effort on this project.

Since FN USA got the M16A4 and now the M4 contracts, they have wasted no time to release the fully loaded semi auto versions of the military counter parts. The M4 Carbine has a pinned A2 suppressor to make it 16". They even come with the military look-alike inventory scan code stickers.

Belt feds have no mag restriction. Its a belt not a mag. So are the fn carbines mil spec guns internally?

Belts themselves are either of a pre-1946 design, or not.

Belts (metallic or fabric) that are "not a reproduction and was originally designed or manufactured for the purpose of feeding rounds into an automatic firearm of a type that was in existence before 1945" are unlimited.

Belts that are reproduction, or of design made 1945 or later are limited to 5 rounds.

The FN guy said the classics are the same spec as the military guns, other than the obvious semi auto thing and the pinned muzzle device.

The military SAW fires from an open bolt, as do many FA.
The Civvy semi fires fires from a closed bolt, as required by BATFE.

Aside from that, it is a pretty good copy.

For those not at Media Day, I'll mention that to promote the semi release, they had a full there also.
So we got to fire a 20 round belt thru the semi first, then another 20 thru the full auto.
Too empty too soon!
